I just had to say that we finally sat down together & watched this last night. When it was over my 16 year old grandson yells "That was awesome". My daughter says "Yeah that was really good". So surprise, surprise. Then my GS says it is now his favorite new movie (it used to be Walk the Line) & I tell him it is because of Jessica Biel & he says no, it is because Norton is his all time favorite actor (since Fight Club). He then says "Now I know why you like Rufus so much?" "He is a really good actor!" So there you go.....another unbiased opinion. Up until now I had been the butte of his jokes with his telling me how fugly Rufus is & that he can't act. (like we are all experts on acting) LOL Anyway after all the hoopla, I just sat there with my mouth hanging open.

It was a hit, then? So can you endorse this review, which I thought was great: "Credit writer-director Neil Burger for excellent casting. Norton is both stoic and a bit mad as the aggrieved musician. Biel is perfect as his true love and Sewell seethes with repressed madness as the man who would be king. He's a villain's villain. DVD extras are a bit skimpy (actor/director commentary and two negligible short features), but the film proper soars like a white dove produced from a scrap of paper. (full article here: www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/movies/article/0,2792,DRMN_23_5288728,00.html ) I think he liked it...

"aggrieved musician"? Surely, the reviewer meant magician? And, britfan, I'm impressed with your grandson's taste. Most 16 year old boys are into action films and horror films, aren't they?

Watched the DVD this weekend & really enjoyed it. The wig & beard/mustache combo. didn't look as bad as I expected. I should have known Rufus would be able to pull it off. He gave a wonderful performance, I just wish he'd had more scenes.
If you buy the DVD be sure to watch the Director Neil Burger's commentary in the Special Features too. He has some interesting information about the magic tricks, as well as some interesting remarks about Rufus.

I got the movie in the mail yesterday and what bothers me is that the extras are minimal to nothing. A very brief interview, no deleted scenes, not even the filmography section that most DVD's have now-a-days. It is frustrating - I wanted to the the deleted scenes! (the Rufus deleted scenes!)

He is just such an exceptional actor that I want to see more of him. Actually, I was very disappointed with the script and thought they let the bottom fall out by neglecting Leopolds true character. Rufus did the best he could, as always, with the limitations forced on him. Because I felt shorted, I hoped the DVD would give me cut scenes that I could enjoy watching him perform. Now, I feel shorted on the DVD as well.

Rufus did the best he could, as always, with the limitations forced on him. Because I felt shorted, I hoped the DVD would give me cut scenes that I could enjoy watching him perform. Now, I feel shorted on the DVD as well. I think this is one of Rufus' strengths as an actor. No matter what he gives you, you still want more. After 3 hours of Rock 'n' Roll I was sorry to see it end. I can't tell you the last time that happened to me in the theatre. Perhaps Vanessa Redgrave in Long Days Journey into Night.... When he creates a character you believe that character lived and breathed before he walked on screen or stage and that he goes on living afterward (if he goes on living of course) I always want more. Illuminata nearly makes me cry I want to see more of the play so badly. Of course there are exceptions <cough> Zorro <cough> where I just want to see the poor man die already so he can get out of the picture. The complexity of his characters just fascinates me. Every time I see him even in the same role, I see something new and his emotional transparency is nothing short of glorious. Working on the webpage, I've had a chance to read many of the old reviews of his stage work and it seems he's always been very appreciated by the theatre community. Shame the twits in Hollyweird don't know brilliance when they see it. Shame Rufus feels compelled to try to convince them.
