Today I watched the DVD with the director's commentary. I always find the comments quite enjoyable and it makes me understand and like the film even if I'm a little ambivalent about it. Lots of nice words for Rufus from Neil Burger. Rai I've been waiting for someone to say they've seen the commentary! Earlier I encouraged everyone to see it because of the praise Burger had for Rufus. I also thought the incident with the chair was interesting, and would probably be something Rufus would one day mention in his self depreciating way during an interview!

I've had a couple more requests, so here is the chair story... Leopold's scenes were filmed in a palace that belonged to Ferdinand II, and filled with expensive antiques. Sophie tells him she won't marry him, and walks out of the room afterward. Leopold, enraged, storms out behind her. Rufus decided to improvise on his way out of the room, and knocks over a chair that was in his pathway to the door. When he did this he broke the back of the chair. While retelling this story the Director's voice begins to sound petulant, and he remarks that it was a very expensive chair that cost them a lot of money. That's Okay I know they didn't pay him what he's worth anyway ;D ;D > __________________________________________-

I think that is the funniest story! I'm sure Rufus felt badly when he found out, but it really is very funny!

Great movie, not as good as The Prestige, but I enjoyed it. Rufus was the best part of the movie!!!

I've just watched the director's commentary (thanks for the reminder, Rai) and it added so much to my understanding of the film and Burger's ideas about what he was trying to achieve. He said some very nice things about Roof, too! I, and my entire family actually, liked it much better than The Prestige, which we thought was over the top and not nearly as interesting. G xo

Saw it! Wasn't he cross? I always want to laugh when his brow gets furrowed and he starts shouting and stamping his feet. I can just imagine him as Rumpelstiltskin.

Sorry, I was sort of free associating because I've read a lot of the reviews that have come out of the UK this week. I was referring to them, not you. I guess I didn't state that very clearly. Apologies. I had just read one right before I read what you had to say so naturally I presumed you could read my mind and know that. Now you've explained, I'll forgive you, then LOL Only what I've already said - don't forget, I've only seen this once. And I didn't intend to write more than a couple of lines about it, I just got carried away once I started! I didn't watch it in analytical mode, my observations were just what I came up with thinking about it afterwards, and his reasons for going in disguise still puzzle me - exposing Eisenheim as a fraud didn't mean Leopold had to be in disguise, so I still wonder if he wanted to see if she was still alive for other reasons. Of course, once I get the DVD and can watch it several times more, I may change my mind completely! Oh, and please feel free to use my review for the website (if you still want to, after me being snitty!) now I know you don't intend to misrepresent what I said!!! Britfan - sweetie, thank you so much for your kind words (still blushing!) Ree - I love that story about the chair! I bet he was mortified when he heard about the cost - but surely they had insurance?? GE2

Finally got to see this today. Wont be ranking it amongst my favourite Rufus movies unless I think differently when I see it on dvd. Wasnt feeling the best (nasty cold so breathing was sort of a priority) and the chap who came and sat next to me, while not exactly having Tourettes, was pretty darned fidgety.
The boy sure does temper very well - scares you with the violence of the outbursts really. Other than that, how many times can you see illusions of people? Jessica Biel was a pleasant surprise but the whole time I was looking to see how different it would have been had Ruf got his way to be Uhl. That said, you could believe that Giamatti was the son of a butcher.
Noticed the chair too!

pretty much my take on it as well. nevertheless I bought the DVD because it just hurts me not to have one of rufus' performances to watch over and over...
and it was a better picture than the prestige.
as to the chair... of course they were insured.

I'm spending some time this afternoon skimming through Roof's films looking for winks. I haven't seen the final scene in this since it came out on DVD.
Boy was he good in it. Such disappointment. Such frustration... I wish it was longer. The more I see it, the more I'm certain that they killed the wrong person.

Rufus was so good in this - and as with most all of Roof's villains, I ended up feeling sorry for him because Eisenheim fooled everyone and no one knew the truth except Leopold. I thought it was a great story. Rufus would have been excellent as Uhl, but with that face and body, you can see why the casting director would have none of it. G xo

I watched it again last night (just the Rufus parts) and am still amazed at his outbursts - he does them so very well. He is such an amazingly gifted actor, I must have watched 5-6 of his movies yesterday and each and every role is so different and he is so utterly believeable in each and every one!
