Found my beloved DVD copy through Amazon back in the fall. should still be there, i would think. loved the director's notes, although i got a little weary of his son's involvement in them after a while. would rather have had input from Rufus, but that's just me!!! ig kept nagging at me who torturro was. i don't watch a lot of tv or movies (at least, that was true at one point in my life), but it finally dawned on me i had seen him in "oh brother, where art thou." loved that movie - for the music and the homor. wish rufus had been in it.

John Turturro was in another film that, now that I think of it, I wish Rufus had been in: "The Man Who Cried." Rufus would have been excellent in the role of the gypsy/Romany played by Johnny Depp.
That was a very engaging, dark, but beautiful film - a drama set mostly in Paris on the eve of WWII that also starred Cate Blanchett and Cristina Ricci. For those of you who enjoy opera music, the featured tenor in the beautiful sound track was Salvatore Licitra, the super talent hailed as the next Pavarotti until his life was tragically cut short this past September at age 43.

I adore Illuminata - it's a splendid little gem of a work and I love it - flawed or not - some people have complained about John Tuttorro (Spelling?) in this, but I still delighted in it. RS is so splendidly hammy! I especially love the line "F#$k you" to the audience and "Paris - its a city full of Tarts!"
Of course his first line is classic - who can ever forget "Almost?"

Just splendid.

Even as I'm still new to the glorious goodness of Rufusitis -- I feel that 'Illuminata' is one of my dearest treasures - this, 'Charles II' and 'T&I' 'Woodlanders' and the ever silly 'She Creature' ...
While RS is shockingly beautiful in 'Dangerous Beauty' my dissonance with aspects of that film currently keep me from really enjoying that one. Maybe time will increase my pleasure until I'm as keen on it as many others here are - and until I can see Zen or some of the other works mentioned here - I will continue to enjoy a slightly twisted perspective on our darling Rufus.
I'll be looking forward to POTE.

"Illuminata" is such a lovely film. The perfect mix of fun and drama and so much feeling. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Rufus is so drop dead gorgeous in this.

I wish I could agree but, although I think RS is good in the film, I think it's flawed. A tad self-indulgent and unclear. But maybe it's just me? Just watched it for the first time a few days ago. Should I give it another chance and watch it again?

This is the kind of film that may grow on you upon re-watching, but I can also see why it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. I ended up quite surprised at HOW much I loved it, though.

Good point KMK
It does grow on you - the strange magical story...the other-worldly nature of creation - the pain of love...
PS I love your new avatar!

Ildikó Bánsági is a Hungarian actress, and I watched a conversation about her on TV last weekend. Among other things, she was praised by her colleagues for her beautiful crying. Her response was a quote from Duse, it was about the importance of the rehearsals. I tried to Google it later (I didn't find it), but look what I bumped into: books.google.hu/books?id=tanPYs6ArLIC&pg=PA458&lpg=PA458&dq=eleonora+duse+rehearsing+for+your+own+benefit&source=bl&ots=QfLfo5pF5a&sig=ZLT8CW2JyZug-kozAYQR4uYu3qA&hl=hu&sa=X&ei=medkUu3UEMfZtQa5kYCIBg&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=eleonora%20duse%20rehearsing%20for%20your%20own%20benefit&f=false"Signorina, are you rehearsing for your own benefit, or for mine?"I had known that Rachel's character in Illuminata was based on Eleonora Duse, but yay, this is a direct quote! They just changed the "Signorina" into Simone. That 'Florence, 1 December 1906' entry in the book seems to me like a starting point for the rehearsing scene of Illuminata, but the movie is more colourful. Well, much more colourful. That scene is full of good bits, and Dominique has some great moments!!! Rufus is the funniest background ever, don't you think? First of all, there are those funny faces he pulls when the girls are getting "serious". Then Rachel runs to him to attack (Dominique, why are you always looking out into the audience?), and we can receive that hilarious explanation - "Well, I'm here, audience is there, they know I'm here, I know they're there, it would be rude not to acknowledge them." Poor Rachel goes back to Simone and to her "crossing" problem. And while they are discussing this embarrassing it's-not-possible-emotionally thing, Dominique is fencing in the background! Then the girls go deep, and Simone's teardrops appear, and Dominique has the infamous line: "She is not gonna keep crying during my speech, is she?"I love this scene sooooo much! I love Rufus's acting in it! Besides, Rufus himself is a master of teardrops, isn't he? Oh, I left out the "injured" exclamation when Dominique realised Simone wants to be Tuccio's muse. "For him? Oh!"

Great find, Detective Adina!
Oh, and thanks for those beautiful screencaps. Methinks Dominique begs for a re-watch.

and Thank You Adina for reminding of these two wonderful scenes Especially the glorious "Well, I'm here .....". Even reading it makes me laugh out loud!! Thanks too for reminding me that it's time to watch 'Illuminata' again.
