ambra, there's a new Illuminata DVD currently available on ebay for $5.95 plus shipping. I wish I'd checked there as well as Amazon, as I believe I also got an edited edition (but have now ordered another which I trust will be unedited).

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!, lizap! I just went over and bought it and since it's rated "R" I trust it's not edited. It's being sent from Weirton, WV so since it's coming from fairly close by, I'm hoping I'll have it by Monday at the latest.

Just watched the "uncut" version of "Illuminata" and I can't believe how much had been deleted from the copy I got! Rufus' first scene with the "I'm almost happy" girl, the scene in the tunnel where he's following and imitating the mugger and then nearly gets caught for being a mugger himself, the "you bastard" scene and part of the scene leading up to it and even more that didn't include Rufus, like the scene where Flavio is arrested and anything that involved sex and/or nudity. The first version I got was definitely intended for a much more conservative audience than the original.

Ambra, what copy did you purchase that it was edited so horribly? Where did you purchase it from?

Ambra, what copy did you purchase that it was edited so horribly? Where did you purchase it from? I ordered it from amazon. It was a region 1&4 compatibled dvd and the cover is completely different than the second one I got. For a dvd that was edited for sexual content, I found it hypocritical that the cover had a close-up of a woman's black lace undie clad crotch while the rated "R" version I got from ebay had a beautiful painting of the staircase scene at the end of the film. Just make sure if you order a copy, it is a rated "R" version and is just a region 1 or region 2, not one for Portugal region 4.

I watched this movie on the FLIX cable channel Wednesday and recorded it at the same time. It was the complete movie with all the sex and dirty talk. I loved the movie.
Even though I hadn't seen the movie before I knew who was under 'i'm almost happy' girl's skirt, lol.
The ending sence was my favorite, it made me feel like I was attending an actual play that Rufus was in. I cried.

Thanks for the review sunshineprincess! Almost everybody here seems to have the same good opinion of it, so I guess I'll have to put it on my wishlist.

Ok, I have just watched this for the second time, so I could get my thoughts together. POSSIBLE SPOILERSI loved this movie, for many reasons. I thought it was really funny in so many ways--ranging from sarcastic and cynical remarks to gentle pokes at human foibles. A lot of it was inside theater humor, and some of it probably passed over my head, but at the same time some of it could have applied to almost any small workplace where people are overworked, underpaid, and trying to do their best despite the slackers, the clueless bosses, the backstabbing, and the not-so-well-hidden romances (a good precursor to The Office). In fact, it could apply to almost any endeavor where you get more than one human involved. The main difference was in the characters' passion for Art, but again that was a good source of humor. ("I can't cross emotionally from left to right.") I also liked that, despite the existential themes and deep dialog about the nature of love, the movie was so rooted in real life--funny and sad and surprising all at the same time. Though I said above that some of it could apply to other settings, the film did a great job of evoking the world the characters inhabited, so that I was able to work out relationships and personalities for some characters who had very little dialog. The sense of family was very real. The acting was incredible, from the smallest role to the biggest. As others mentioned, Sarandon, Walken, and Gazzarra were great. I saw upthread that a few people did not care as much for Katherine Borowitz (Rachel). I thought she was just fine. I think I related to the character a lot because of having some of the same unspoken worries (without the sometimes jackassy husband she had)--sometimes insecurities creep in when you hit middle age. If I had any quibble with Rachel, it was that she was a little too saintly throughout. Even in her anger, she struck out in ways she knew would hurt him, but it was so obviously a fearful reaction that it mitigated the nastiness. But I don't blame the actress for that, because it's obvious from Turturro's commentary that he is still totally in love with his wife, so the character was bound to be a bit too perfect. Ok, Rufus. As always, he held his own and then some with other powerhouse actors. He was perfect and hilarious when playing the sterotypical self-centered actor scenes and then turned around and nailed Dominique's underlying insecurity when he thought he was being abandoned. I also thought that it made sense that Dominique would perform the final scene so beautifully. I don't think that an obviously neurotic, dedicated, and meticulous playwright like Tuccio would be writing roles for him if he wasn't, despite all his faults, an excellent actor. Rufus was quite amazing in that scene. Physically, he was so beautiful in this role. I have no idea what the "almost" girl's problem was. But here is the true test: I would have liked this movie even if Rufus had not played Dominique. Not as much maybe, but still. My DVD does not have a "making of" featurette that others have mentioned in their reviews. Pity, because I would have liked to see what the actors thought about the film. So annoying when they put out multiple versions--what is the point except to anger the consumer! (Sorry, still quite bitter about not having the shirtless training scene in my "Director's Cut" of A Knight's Tale .)

ahhhhhh! i knew you would like it!!!! splendid review, i am sure turturro would be glad to read that fans really understood his goal in making this film. i do not have the making of either. here is one film that would make it interesting - they are so redundant, often, these featurettes - and its missing. i do think that dominique is one of rufus' strongest work, well... it is a very rich and complex role, and he had something to sink his teeth in. imagine if a few more beefy roles like this came his way... we would hear oscar calling. like you, i liked borowitz just fine, just as i liked all the others, she so rightly depicted the creative spirit of a theater director, caring for her flock like a mother hen. i found it touching that turturro should have celebrated his love for his wife like this. and that she would accept the hommage with such humility, instead of playing the diva.

I love this movie a whole lot, it's so good in so many ways. I can't even single out one performance as they all shine so beautifully. Loved Walken's turn, he's such an amazing talent, Bill Irwin equally as good, Borowitz was sweet and biting as well. Sarandon was absolutely perfect and of course there is Ruf, nice ensemble acting all around. Turturro captured all the nuances subtle and blatant in good form, I've been around theatre people most of my life thanks to my sister, and the diva part as played by Sarandon and Ruf were spot on. Sweet little film that I'm sure many people missed when it first ran.

Saw this first quite a little while ago and though I remembered enjoying it then , think I enjoyed it even more the second time. From the minute it started, I had a little bubble of laughter that remained all the way through to the final "scene " on stage when Dominique 's speech ( Rufus) moved me to tears. . I thought everyone was excellent even the much maligned John Turturro. The dialogue was brilliantly OTT and there were some lines that will be hard to forget , particularly the masturbation one. Rufus never fails to give his best and showed his enormous range and his deft touch with comedy.I hope he continues to hold out for different and maybe "odd" parts if this is the result. He sparkled like a diamond. Kerry, I know you said you would watch this too, so I would be interested to hear what you thought and anybody else too . With a bar of galaxy in one hand and a glass of white Grenache in the other , it has been a most enjoyable night!!!
