The Roof is such an enigma in that he appears to be this really chilled out guy but right now, he's really steering his career and is doing the opposite of going with the flow. He's the most chilled out control freak I've come across! ;D It's interesting to compare him with Michael Sheen who may have gone with type casting (i.e. real life characters are his forte) and seems to be enjoying a big peak right now. And so is Rufus. Hmm, I guess there are more ways to Rome.
Just boys please, don't join the cast of Rome, kplzthnx.

I've decided that what with the Golden Globes, BAFTA's and Oliviers, I'm all awarded-out for one year. I am skipping the Oscars broadcast tomorrow night and indulging in a little Amazing Grace! One can never be Roofed-out imo.

I'm in Cleveland visiting our daughter - we saw AG yesterday and they all liked it while I loved it!!! Roof is terrific - funny, quirky, passionate, and he got more than a few laughs from the audience. I loved the look, actually - and the aging make-up was very good. Roof's part isn't huge but it is significant - Clarkson is a pivotal character and he has many more scenes than Albert Finney. His opening scene, in the dining room with the shackles, was very moving. And he was very tender in the scene reciting poetry to his his baby. That scene reminded me of the scene in Luther where he is carrying his little boy, though the son in Luther was a toddler rather than a baby.

I just got back from the theater, and I'm still at a loss for words. Go see this movie. Several times. And bring friends with you.
I hope it gets an Oscar next year!!!

I am going to see it this week - tonight preferably. My convention is over!
Here is a clip from the Chicago Tribune, Michael Phillips, movie critic:
Mostly we get what we expect. The script ticks off the elements: A romance with wife-to-be Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai); friendship and political alliance with Prime Minister William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch); heart-to-heart talks with mentor and former slave trader John Newton (Albert Finney), who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace" to atone for his sins. Some wonderful actors have at it, including Michael Gambon and Rufus Sewell. The latter might've made a better Wilberforce, in fact--a less saintly, more politically cunning one, at least.

We saw Amazing Grace this afternoon. What a powerful film! It was terribly moving and beautifully filmed, a film that is totally engrossing. My husband was so absorbed in the story I don't believe he moved a muscle during the entire film and I'm still in a bit of a daze.

I just saw it. What a great profound movie. I loved how he portrayed Clarkson. He kinda added a bit of humor into the movie, though the movie was about a very moving, sensitive topic.

Finally got to see this today and why they made us Canadians wait a month longer for the release than the US I don't know, but I am so happy I got the chance to see it. For some reason I thought Ruf only had a couple small meaningful scenes but was I ever pleasantly surprised to discover he was in most of the movie. I absolutely loved it! And what a cast of great actors! Now when you guys are chatting about this Ioan guy - I can put a face to the name. Albert Finney was great as was Ciarin Hinds and Ruf, oh my, what a great part!
There were maybe 9-10 people in the theatre which is good for an early matinee here - no one laughed (except me) or clapped (I had to hold myself myself back) or cried (I did twice) but strangely enough everyone there stayed for the final credits to show, which usually doesn't happen. There has been absolutely no promotion of this film here and if you weren't already aware of it people have no way of knowing about it. I'm curious as to how long it'll stay at the theatre - tommorrow will be a week - that's why I went today in case they pull it tommorrow. I loved the first scene of Ruf's where you first only hear that unmistakeable voice off camera, I thought oh, there's Ruf, then a few seconds later he enters the room.
They showed a trailer for Paris, Je Taime before the movie and it had 2 short clips with Ruf in both of them. I wasn't planning on seeing the movie but after watching the trailer - I definitely will be there!

Very interesting piece from The Daily Mail found by someone on another Rufus board. It's long but worth a read. However, the DM used the wrong picture! That photo is from Amistad (1997) not AG! Geesh!! G xo From IMBD Amazing Grace. Interesting article. Apparently it was Clarkson (Rufus Sewell's character in the movie) who was the real 'hero' in the abolition of slavery: ............................................................. www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=444105&in_page_id=1770

I remember reading something along those lines a while back when the picture first came out. It's nice to see it reiterated here. The other was more of an article about Thomas Clarkson's life with some quotes and a poem. I think the link is still on the news page of the website along with the poem if you have an interest.
Thank you for sharing this. ;D

Speaking about Clarkson being airbrushed out of history...did anyone see the latest ads for the film in the Metro newspaper (London)?
The image in the centre of the composite is the one of Clarkson on horseback - but they've substituted Ioann's face for Ruf's! And not too cleverly, either - Clarkson's hair surrounding Wilberforce's face.
Now I know Ioann's pretty and I know he's the star of the film, but airbrushing out Ruf's face...sacrilege!

I hope that the film will still be on in another fortnight because I will be in UK and hope to catch it! It isnt due in Aus until June!
I can't believe that Metro did that - sheesh! What can you expect from a free rag?!

It now appears the photo-sacrilege is in all UK press adverts. Spotted it in two national newspapers today. I can feel a rant to the promoters coming on...
