Meggie's family rules don't really allow for names, either, but she told them she was using it as a synonym for "red" and, apparently, no one checked her spelling. Way to go, girlfriend. I mention this on her behalf only because one of you might need to employ this same gambit in the future and I want you to have a good excuse. Did anyone note that one of the symptoms is a tiny, slight, hardly-even-noticed deviousness necessary to satisfy the demands of our Rufus-systems on occasion? I admit, among all my other new predilections, to the following holiday-related one. I've already noted it to Frannie, and she voiced similar thoughts, so I know at least one of you is on the same page: When I read the post about Rufus heading back to the states a few days ago, I was a little sad (even though he was coming back to my "turf"). I wanted him to stay in England with his family and be with his mum and Billy for the holidays. I've kept hoping either they were going to join him or he was going to turn around and go right back before Christmas Eve. Just want to think of him surrounded by loved ones during the holidays. I know -- it's the mom in me -- but that "attitude" is part of my list of symptoms. Some of those of us who write fanfiction have noted, too, that while we have great "power" in making Rufus' characters "star" in a variety of scenes of our choosing, Rufus often bends us to his will and leads us down paths we would not have considered on our own. It's a weird thing to have a man you have never met influence your creative juices in a direction you never intended, related to a character neither of you will ever greet in the flesh because they are either imaginary or dead. Talk about a bizarre symptom! This may take the cake. (Although my on-going fantasy that I will one day open my front door and find the boy grinning at me with a compilation of my fanfic stories in his hand and asking if I'm OK with having them brought to the big screen ranks right up there with it, I suppose.) Without going into bedroom scenes, can anyone top this craziness?

I mention this on her behalf only because one of you might need to employ this same gambit in the future and I want you to have a good excuse. That is EXACTLY what happened, Anglo Thanks for that, though. My family have gotten used to me and my Rufus-soaked brain but I could use that excuse when I play Scrabble with some of my friends who have yet to see the light. I'm sure most of them will see it when ALVH comes out ;D LOL, Meg, I love that! (What did your family say? ;D ) Please take a photo again if you manage to sneak in some of his characters' names ;D They loved it! I put my "U" and "R" to the side so I wouldn't use them by mistake, telling everyone I was saving those two for my perfect word. This was fine with them and when they saw what it was in the end, there wasn't a single thing spoken against it being a name (to be honest, we bend the rules a LOT. I think the only words we don't use are ones that come with an apostrophe like they're and also geographical abbreviations). I think most of my family let it slide because I managed to spell out 'cuisine' earlier in the game and got a triple word score. I think they were afraid I'd win, but I wasn't anywhere close to winning in the end. I had the biggest smile on my face, though ;D I will definitely take pics of any of the other names I manage to get (if I do). Rufus often bends us to his will and leads us down paths we would not have considered on our own. Without going into bedroom scenes, can anyone top this craziness? My thoughts exactly. Although I have yet to even think about dabbling in fanfiction, I've had multiple experiences where new male lead characters for new novel ideas will come to me in Rufus form. I've tried to imagine these characters in different form, but it just doesn't happen. While I was in England over the summer I had an idea and my male lead walked into my imagination looking exactly like Rufus in his mid-late 90s look. What I find really odd though, was that I didn't think "Rufus", I thought "Oliver", and I always think "Oliver" when I'm not actually looking at a pic of Roof from that time. I've mentioned it in previous threads, but his work has inspired me so much. Mostly his characters' reactions. I sometimes have trouble imagining reactions and certain facial expressions for my characters, so I turn to actors in films as guides and Rufus has become my constant go-to.

Oh yes. I've mentioned that before, I think, and it still feels pretty weird sometimes. Did anything become of your Oliver character yet, Meg? Sounds like a good-looking boy ;D

(I've had a couple of new ideas for my Oliver story, Kate, since sending you a PM about it. I'm experimenting with a few of them and if I end up using them, I'll have to do MUCH more research, but I'm excited about it!) My mum works for one of the SC counties and a colleague of hers is named...get this... Dr. Hood. I think he used to be the head of one of the school districts, or something. I can't remember. I've actually known of him for a while and I met him a few years ago (he looks nothing like our Jacob, sounds nothing like our Jacob, acts nothing like our Jacob). But since I don't often see him or hear about him, and neither does my mum, I've forgotten to mention it to any of you. My mum has been mentioning his name a lot for the past few days because he retired for a while, then decided to work for the county again but took a different position. It's so funny thinking that when I met him years ago, I couldn't have cared less about his name, and now it causes me to have mini heart attacks Speaking of forgetting to mention other somewhat Rufusy people...did I ever tell you all that my dad has an uncle named Rufus? Honestly, I have an Uncle Rufus, a cousin Mark, a cousin Paul, an uncle Mick, a neighbour named Eric. A mother who loves Dylan Thomas and the Welsh culture, a photographer sister, cousins with the surname Seawell, an artistic grandfather, and an Australian possibly-soon-to-be brother-in-law. Just a coincidence?? Knowing my luck....yes.

(Oh, that's cool, Meg Have fun writing!) My uncle who died last year was called Paul, and the name has long been one of my favourites for a baby boy, should we ever have kids. (Along with Jacob and Frederick, by the way.) It's really funny how you come to see those everyday details with a different, Rufusy eye

Meg, I can certainly relate to your mini heart attacks when your mom mentions Dr. Hood. It's like me not helping but smiling whenever I think of the Rachel and Jacob in my class.

symptom - leaving my new Rufus calendar prominently displayed on my desk in hopes that someone will mention his gorgeousness so I will have an excuse to brag about him.

I'm here at home doing some cleaning and I've got Katie Couric's show on in the background. Rod Stewart is her guest. I like Rod's music, but I haven't really watched any interviews he's done so I haven't really ever heard him speak and is it just me or do he and Rufus have the exact same speaking voice? Not the same accent, just the sound of voice. I keep getting distracted because I keep thinking it's an interview with Rufus!

Um...well...can't say I get it myself, but in case anyone's never heard Rod Stewart speak, here's a clip of an interview from 2007: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUkNGGQFGhU(Nothing against Rod, by the way - I love a lot of his songs)

Yes Meg...I think its similar enough to distract me also. Never noticed before. I think I have heard Rods singing voice more than him talking.

You know you've got a case of Rufusitis when you're merrily reading away, and suddenly, guess whose image comes to mind: "With his curly hair, high cheekbones, and brawny shoulders, Leon Battista Alberti, the consummate Renaissance man, clearly qualified as the hunky centrefold of the lot..." Now don't tell me you can read that without automatically, unwittingly, replacing Rufus for "Leon Battista Alberti" !! BTW the quote is from "La Bella Lingua" by Dianne Hales. Rufusitis - there's no cure!!

Who else would we be thinking of - I'm sure I'm not the only one who immediately had Marco Venier before her mind's eye.

Getting a slight tingly feeling when it's time for the postman to appear, because today just might be the day your new Rufus DVD shows up in the mail.

I am writing a Romance comedy at the moment and, as said before by many of you, I imagine Rufus as my character Benedict. Whenever I come across a section which needs to be angry, sad, happy etc in the book and I have to explain his emotions I alway picture one of his characters in my mind. Once I showed a friend one finished chapter (she also dapples in writing) and she suggested that the man wouldn't say or do something that Ben did but I know that he would. Funnily enough though now I think of Benidict as an actual man but he is so much like Rufus.
