Herrmannka, there's nothing to stop you from writing to the production company, I imagine it's an unusual request but they may well oblige if you are as enthusiastic about it as you sound. Stranger things have happened. Best of luck with your search PS Or you could write to Rufus at his management company. It's a bit last resort, but he's known for being such a good egg where his most devoted fans are concerned and if he does happen to still have a copy or know where you can get one......well, you never know.

you know ruthy, it's a great idea!!-i will write to rufus and thus find out how sensitive he is to his fans' needs ...of course the last resort would be to buy a new dvd with English subtitles but it's no challenge , isn't it ?

At last I got "Charles II" (English version with Dutch subtitles! ) and I saw it. Even if I understood very little of the dialogues, I liked it very very much. Let me just say what Rufus is: so much amazing, beautiful, handsome as Charles is fragile, lovable, afflicted. I didn't understand well who were and what they wanted by him really, George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and his cousin Barbara Villiers. I loved Catherine too, Shirley is wonderful in her role and Charles is so delicate with her. I saw Charles II character before, in the movie "The Libertine", the story of John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester. The King was played by John Malkovich and the" Libertine" was Johnny Depp. I liked that film, though Charles II is quite different in respect to this Rufus version.

hi dreamer!!..seems you bought the film from the same seller as i did(Dutch subtitles suck:(... but so much of Rufus on screen makes up for all the inconveniences, doesn't it ? guys, is it just my impression or Rufus put on weight in CHARLES II ??(if so-did he do it on purpose??- 'cause i think these extra kilos made him look even more like a king=so mighty, so strong:)

I have the copy with the dutch subtitles as well. When I go to scene selection and start from there it removes them for me so you might try that for yours as well!

I'm glad you mentioned it -- I wondered if it was just the costumes, but his face looks more full, as well.

In the scenes where the king, ahem, disrobes, he is definitely on the heavier side. He also has that gorgeous little double chin. The weight, in my opinion anyway, makes him look less pretty (i.e. the cheekbones are not so prominent) and far, far more manly. This is my Rufus of choice every time.

You know, now that Herrmannka brings it up, I wonder if he did purposely gain a bit of weight to play the king? For some reason I just assumed he was having a natural weight fluctuation, and since I like his heavier, cuddly look, I thought nothing else about it. Does anyone remember reading anything along these lines after the series first aired? That was one sexy tummy he shows off!

Just saw Stage Beauty again, with Rupert Everett doing CHarles ll and its fun to compare to THe Last King . I did wonder how come Billy Crudup, and not Rufus , was cast in the role of Ned Kynaston. IN profile, he'd of course be much more rugged than Billy Crudup, and his physique is decidly more male, but I wonder what Rufus would have done with the character.

I got the dvd of the American version of "Charles II" today and I loved it! I'm a big history buff but sadly, know little of British history so this film, like "Amazing Grace" taught me a lot about English history. Rufus was remarkable in the title role; he shifted seamlessly between Charles the man who loved women, lots of women, and Charles the King, fighting for the stability of his kingdom. I especially loved the tenderness between him and Catherine. As he said, if a woman ever had a reason to hate him it was her but she remained his loyalist ally. Their scenes are some of my favorites. The scene where he's strolling with his sister by the lake and walking what looks like three Papillions made me laugh because if they were that particular breed, it made me admire his skills with dogs as well. My mom and step-dad have a Papillion and walking her alone can be a task because she's so high-energy. I can't imagine trying to control three of them!

Ah they would have been Cavalier King Charles' spaniels, old British breed popularised by the king himself.
