yes, the marriage certificate that would have proven his "illegitimate son" to be legitimate, and so would have settle the quarrrel about who would succeed, brother or son the only reason i can see is that he did not want to threaten his marriage to his current wife That's exactly what I was thinking. Interesting question on the marriage certificate. The Wikipedia entry on the film (cited above) mentioned this scene specifically: I'm in the camp that if such a doc existed, he would not have burned it. I think it was just dramatic license. Yes... However... If he was still legally married to his son's mother, in marrying his current wife, he would have more than one wife!

yes, the marriage certificate that would have proven his "illegitimate son" to be legitimate, and so would have settle the quarrrel about who would succeed, brother or son It wouldn't have been a marriage certificate as such, as they didn't exist then, and it is unlikely (if this wasn't just dramatic licence, of course) to have been a copy of a parish register as such a marriage wouldn't have been performed in a church or chapel. If anything, my guess is it would have been some sort of declaration by whoever officiated. Yes, it would have provided a legitimate Protestant heir (if such a marriage wasn't challenged as being invalid), but I think burning it was an act by Charles to protect not only the monarchy but the stability of the country, as he knew Monmouth would be a puppet king. Better to have a Catholic succession than have everything he'd fought for ruined by those sponsoring his son. Also, he had obtained so much Catholic money secretly, it's feasible he was protecting Monmouth's life by ensuring James succeeded. The French may otherwise have taken their revenge on him, or at least made it known how Charles was funded, so Parliament would have done the job instead. Ooh, deep stuff! Just my take on it. Yes, he was very loyal to Catherine despite her not producing a legitimate heir, wasn't he? Perhaps combined with a desire to thwart Barbara Villier's/Lady Castlemaine's ambitions after everything he'd done for her? I have to say, I never tire of watching this. It is the role that got me hooked on Rufus......yet much of the time it's not like it's him I'm watching at all, but the real king. And I still can't believe he wasn't even nominated for a BAFTA! Much as I like TOTS, he deserved a nomination far more for Charles than for Petruchio.

as i was writing robbie a minute ago, i am in the process of watching my A&E dvd of charles II and it's disgustingly butchered.
i have seen the original on youtube, and even the poor viewing, cut in 10 minutes of film, was so much more entrancing than... that.
so many scenes have been cut it makes the series into another series altogether. you cant even know who the characters and their motivations are. and of course, the big knife went through most of the sex scenes - and you still see part of them in the making of, how lame!!!
i will go and try to order direct from the U-K, if i have to purchase another dvd player, so be it. this is simply not an acceptable way to treat a good story. the filmmakers should have sued.
grrrrrrrrrrr. all i wanted was to bow ecstatically before my gorgeous king charles, and now i am angry. i hate this week end with a ( power and the ) passion.

My sister and I watched Charles II this weekend. It was the A&E "butchered" version as Tipou described it. We would have preferred the UK version, but we don't have the correct DVD player. Anyway, we had enough hormones raging without any more explicit sex scenes, for now anyway !! I mean it's the season of Lent and I'm trying to be good ?? We loved this production, the best work of Rufus we have seen yet. Yes, we enjoyed Middlemarch, Dark City, The Illusionist and Amazing Grace. But To see Ruf in almost every scene was such a treat. Definitely some rich, sweet eye candy. I've read most of the opinions all of you have posted before this one of mine about his brilliant acting in the role. So subtle at times, soft and pensive, anger, rage, disgust, compassion, soft-hearted, intuitive.... Rufus exhibited these feelings/qualities just at the right moments. He uses his eyes, face, his whole being as part of his acting genius. I've said it before and truly believe that he is one of the best actors of our time, of all time. I ordered Vinyan as many of you have and can't wait to see it. And won't that be fun to watch and discuss. !!!!!!!

Spice, thanks for your review of the series. You gave a great description of his amazing expressions. Someone has posted the Brit version (as far as I know, all scenes intact) in segments. So, if you wanted to check out the missing, ahem, parts, you could. This is the link to the first segment. From there you should be able to find the rest by following the poster's links. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiYmj1iNF70.

RUEFUL: Thanks for the info. I will check the link to see what the A&E version left out. Maybe I should wait until after Lent

oh my god, spice, if lent means anything to you, please wait LOL. (now i know you wont!)
anyway, i have decided that i will order the original from GB. the hell with butchered versions. i cannot believe how different the story his with all the cuts. i felt like i had missed all the subtle political entanglements that so fascinated me when i saw it first - and on you tube too! i mean, it had to be good!! i think that rupert graves' character, especially, suffered from the cuts. and also, the A&E version lacks the best sex scenes, but i should not repeat it, or else spice will have to confess again.

If you're trying to maintain purity of mind, definitely! Some people, once having seen it, might be tempted to replay certain scenes over and over again. Nobody we know from this board, of course, but some people.

TIPOU and RUEFUL: To wait until after Lent or not... that is the question !! If before Easter then I will be able to include all "sins" of hormone raging, Rufus-wanting, Rufus- lust, etc., etc., with one confession. Otherwise, I'd have to confess again after Easter. My plan is to just tell the priest before Easter that I suffer from a relatively new affliction which my sister and I have termed "RUFUS-ITIS". I will give the priest the address to this website if he asks any questions. He will take pity on me, give me absolution, tell me to say 5,000 rosaries and tell me to go and "sin" no more. By the time I show up around the Christmas season, I'll make sure I go to a different priest for confession. Perhaps by that time the Pope will have heard all about this affliction and accept it as a normal -female- condition. I mean please............. I am sure God wants us to appreciate all of His beautiful creations, such as in Rufus Sewell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, spice! I can see you've been through this before! To once again quote the delightful Marco in Dangerous Beauty: "God made sin that we might know his mercy." GE2: That was perfect!

I've just sat through the first 6 eps, I forgot what a masterpiece this is. He's in every scene, and they're all so good. I have the A&E version I'd have to sit thru that to see the changes. The story is so interesting and to think it's based on fact. What a treat.

No one is laughing and don't you feel stupid. I unknowingly purhcased the DVD A&E version, in all honest I'd have to watch both back to back to compare the two. I've been watching on You Tube, I forgot just how much I adored him in this, he's in virtually every scene. The opening sequence is astounding, and quite powerful. Soooooooooooo good is this production, time and time again the BBC knows how to produce quality series. Puts us Yanks to shame. Such wonderful perfs all around, Shirley Henderson is wonderful and very touching. Worth seeing more than once, and not just for the naughty bits either, although they are fun.
