OK I just sat through 'Victory" - I saw it three times to make sure I was fair...
He blew everyone else out of the water! I loved it!
It was certainly not the most charming or charismatic aspects of RS but he was fantastic -- he made you wonder 'who is this guy' 'what is he doing' - ' exactly what's happened in his past to make him the highly disturbed sociopathically dangerous man child that he is" ...( I dread that I can guess... ) Its AMAZING!
He twitches and shudders so brilliantly and his body reactions made his character so disturbing that - I found myself both terrified of him and long to sooth him! Brilliant work...
I want to see IASL next.
I need some time to really enjoy that film but now that I have it its next to watch.
Still love T&I best - or M&I as I like to think of it ...Then Woodlanders/Charles II/ Illuminata/ToTS/TPOTE ...oh dear!

I re-watched Victory recently and was again extremely impressed by Rufus's disturbingly excellent performance. He does Martin's madness so brilliantly that it made my skin crawl, and still he made me believe that there is a deeper reason why he became like that. Again, he made me regret so much that he never stood a chance of breaking out of his fatal dependence on Jones.
One scene I had entirely forgotten about was when he's so desperately thirsty upon their arrival on Heyst's island, his eyes glittering almost turquoise, and the way he drinks greedily, almost animal-like. Creepy and so immensely believable.

I found it in a charity shop a while back, Kate, and flipped through it - have to say, the writing seemed a bit "dry" and uninspiring, so I put it back!
