For this year, we could do away with written messages altogether and try for a photographic element. My idea is for us to come up with a "Happy Birthday Rufus" sign which each of us could print out at home and then have our photos taken somewhere in the town/city we live in, holding the sign. The photos can then be sent to me electronically and i will print them out and include them in the card. I would like to take part in this year's project and your first idea is the one that appeals to me most of all.

I agree. I like the idea of him being able to see where his most devoted fans are from!

Just now saw this thread... You guys want to include LolRoofs? Aaah, that would be so awesome!! Oh my gosh, so exciting! As for the picture thing, I may do a bit of that subtle face-covering. lol But I still think it's a good idea!

I gave the photo thing a trial run today when hubby took a pic of me in front of our cities most famous building. I'm going to struggle with this one. Unless you've got a wide angle lens, which makes you look nice and fat (hubby sold his thank god !) you're going to be a bit small in the pic. At least I was. The board will need to be pretty big if we can read it, thinking sandwich board (appropriately! ;D). At 6" x 4" the messages were plenty big enough last year. The Train video photo's are likely to be much bigger than the actual size of a pic for the card.
Has anyone else tried it and come across this problem?

I think Nell has hit the nail on the head re: the problem with the photo idea. It would make the card an unwieldy size if it were to be of a size that the photos were readily identifiable.
While it might not be as personal - I would vote for the idea of taking the LolRoofs, using many of the ones already posted, for each movie/TV show that Rufus has done. We could maybe recruit some of the more talented LOLer's to take up this challenge??
Along with the LOL's a brief (and I mean really brief, along the lines of HB Rufus, you name, hometown) from each of us. That way no one can back out of participating by claiming to be intimidated by not knowing what to write. Like I did last year.
That way those who are uncomfortable with the language of the LOL's (like Stama) and those who are technically challenged (like kygal and me) can all participate. And the finished product would be something funny, that we know Rufus would appreciate, and something personal from all of us.

Hmm, yeah, I think you're right, Nell and Joyce. I don't really have any interesting places around here to take a picture, anyway. And I think some people (like myself) will probably feel self-conscious about taking photos of themselves. Some LolRoofs and a simple happy birthday from each of us like Joyce said would probably be best.

As Nell mentioned above, a picture of a Rooftopper taken in front of an interesting place would either show a tiny unknowable figure or it must be printed in a large size. But then the whole birthday card would probably turn into a huge book - I thought exactly this was not intended?

May I ask some questions?
I don't quite know what happened last year with Rufus' card, as I wasn't a member then, but am I right in assuming that the card contained a series of individual 6 x 4 personal messages from Rooftoppers? If this was the case, how many were there?
The idea of a photo with a sign in is a good one, but Nell has hit the nail on the head. Perhaps a 6 x 4 of just the individual Rooftopper with a location sign would be ok. After all, it's the individual fan that's important, not the building etc.
For example:
Susan James (aka hotontherufus) Twickenham London UK
Then include a fold up map of the world. The number of fans from each country could be illustrated (maybe by a colour code).
This way, if someone wants to leave a personal message they can (by having a larger board in the photo).
I personally would have a larger board to to hide most of me!! I really hate having my photo taken (and I'm sure a lot of other people do too).
Just another idea for the mix, thought I'd throw it in..........

Hi, perhaps this will be interesting for all new RT members: It's ok meg - i haven't actually made it to bed yet. As i said before, i'm very easily distracted!! Anyhow, for you, and any of the other newbies who may be interested in what we did last year, this is the thread for the 2010 birthday card: rufussewell.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=other&action=display&thread=1398The thread is quite long, but at the end i did post pictures of the finished product before it was sent. On the 2009 birthday card there was a map included with all the locations of the participants of the card marked.

Here is an idea. We could choose a pic of ourselves and attach our town name like this. This would be Rufus'. Then we could send it to Numbat.

With Catheral and myself you can just make me out! But still love idea of photos and Rooflol Love Ophelia
