Set in 1930s England, 20-year-old Flora Poste (Kate Beckinsale, in her debut role), an aspiring Jane Austen, finds herself recently orphaned with only a meager allowance to live on. She chooses to stay with distant relatives on Cold Comfort Farm who are not necessarily wealthy, but will be interesting from a literary perspective. Flora soon realizes that life will be more appalling and more interesting than she could have imagined among a loony new branch of her family tree.
The cast also includes Eilen Atkins, Stephen Fry, Ian McKellen, Freddie Jones, Joanna Lumley and Rufus Sewell.
