I like to listen in the car. It takes my mind off the LA traffic. SERIOUSLY!!!! Thank heavens I have a short commute, but books on tape are always nice for heavy LA traffic, which none of us can avoid 24/7.

It's so frustrating that the U.S. Audible.com website doesn't have any of Roof's Ian Fleming/James Bond stories available (and I have an Audible membership with credits just sitting there waiting to be used). But they're for sale on the UK version. So I took matters into my own hands and paid WAY more than I ever thought I would to buy the whole set of 36 CDs from a re-seller on Amazon.com. They arrived yesterday and were brand new! I'm SO excited!! I'm going to do what Stephen Fry said he did to help him lose weight - listen to Roof's James Bond stories while he was on the treadmill. ------------ Edited to add: I couldn't wait until tomorrow and the treadmill, so I spent the afternoon listening to Casino Royale. After reading through this thread earlier, it's astounding to me that Roof read these books "cold" into the microphone. He did an astonishing job bringing all the characters to life! And, yes, his Texas accent for one character (a CIA guy) really DID sound like a cross between J.R. Ewing and Bill Clinton! Being from Texas I was mightily impressed at how well he did the accent!

Like Judy, recently I broke down and bought the tin of all 12 books (I know, such a tragedy that I had to do that).* It was worth every penny and then some! The spy genre may not appeal to all, and Bond books in particular have some misogynistic and culturally insensitive traits due to when they were written. However, I had read a couple of the books a few years ago, and I remembered that they were quite different from the movies. The movie Bond is a charicature, an inhuman spying and killing machine, and therefore, to me, not too interesting to know. The Bond in the books is a human, full of self-doubt. He is often tired, in pain, angry, etc. He sometimes wants to quit, and he agonizes about the innocent people who sometimes get killed as a result of his actions. He's a womanizer, but if you read the books, he's really a sap about it--it's like he thinks he's in truly love with these women, for as long as it lasts (about 3 days, usually). And for some reason I don't seem to mind this nonsense, with Rufus reading the love scenes. Rufus does an amazing job of bringing this human to life. As usual with his readings, he adds subtle emotion to dialog that is often sparse. Also, he does what he always manages to do, which is create many very different characters with different accents, inflections, and personalities. It's truly unbelievable. I'll give you one example that struck me, which in fact led to this post, because I've been listening to these for about a month. In Goldfinger, the characters have a plan that involves Kentucky, and the first time the character Goldfinger mentions the city Louisville, Rufus pronounced it "Loo-iss-ville." In the US, as far as I know, it's always pronouned "Louie-ville" or even "Lou-ville" if you're sort of mush-mouthed. So of course that kind of drew me up short a second, and I thought, "Oh, Goldfinger's from Britain, he doesn't know how to pronounce it." Then, a couple of seconds later, Bond said it the same way, and I thought, "Oh, Bond doesn't either." It wasn't until it came up a third time, several minutes later, that I finally thought, "Hey, they're ALL RUFUS! That's just how he's pronouncing it!" He actually had me in so deep with his characterizations that I was thinking of them all as separate people. Incredible! For anyone in the US is interested in how I got it: I ordered it from a seller on amazon.uk, paid about 18 pounds plus 7 pounds shipping, which worked out to about $42. There were some dings on the tin, but since I'm only interested in Rufus's reading, I didn't care. It arrived in less than a week, which is less time than it takes things to get from one side of my city to the other via domestic mail. They still have one available. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/014091191X/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&seller=AR2NC758Q972Q&condition=all*I was also annoyed to find I couldn't get them from audible.com, because that is why I joined! They're listed as available when you look at the website initially, but once you open an account and try to buy, you're told that not all books are available in all countries, and until you open an account they don't know what country you're in. All well and good, but I think that ought to be displayed pretty prominently BEFORE you pay your money, and it's not. So, FYI, none of Rufus's readings are currently available in the US via Audible, and that includes the Woodlanders. Excuse the long post, I've just had a giant cup of coffee.

Rueful...you are correct...its "Louie-ville" for Louisville. I live about 60 miles away from this town. Its where they run the Kentucky Derby for those who may not know that. May have to invest in Goldfinger since he gives a shout out to my home state. I did buy Dr No and plan to save it for my upcomming trip. Thanks for the great info!

Those who are enjoying Rufus's reading of the Bond books , my personal favourite is " the man with the golden gun"and "On her Majesty's Secret Service " in which Bond meets the girl he does love and marries. Another Bond book well worth listening to is " the Spy who loved Me"not read by Rufus as it is from the woman's view point.

Thanks kygal--I figured if anyone would have an opinion on the correct pronunciation of Louisville it would be you! Dr No was very good also. I hope you enjoy it.
Frannie, it's a bit disappointing but "Thunderball" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" were not included in the collection, for some reason. It's especially strange since they did include the Samantha Bond reading of "The Spy Who Loved Me." At first I was disappointed that it wasn't read by Rufus, since that meant I only had three of his readings left instead of four, but after listening I do think it was a good choice. It would have been too weird having him do the first person as a woman the whole book, and she did a good job.
I'm still trying to find a way to get the two missing ones, so I've been holding off on listening to "You Only Live Twice." If anyone knows of a US source for Thunderball and On Her Majesty's, please let me know.
