I have to say I really love Rufus' American accents in this. I've never heard him do them before quite like they are here and it's almost as if a different narrator steps in for a moment.
Just something about them makes me smile. There are a lot of things to actually smile about in this book. I'm really enjoying them as I hadn't read them in ages.

I'm confused ..... I expected he would have done a British accent for a British novel!!!!

There are many characters and many accents in these books, and Roof does all of them. I once told him that his Texas accent was a cross between J R Ewing (of Dallas fame) and Bill Clinton. He loved it!

lol! Felix Leiter...
He's actually much better at it now. I adored Dr. Syn. They were just beyond wonderful. The singing, the different characters... I think he's one of the most enthusiastic narrators I've ever heard. It's amazing to think he does some of them completely cold. There are actually times when it slips my mind that all of the characters are him and not a group of people doing a reading. And with the characters with British accents they all have such lovely subtle differences.
There are times when I think I like this sort of thing more than his film work. It's more like theatre, I suppose.

I adored Dr. Syn, too! He told me himself that he read those Bond books cold! He really is extremely intelligent and quick, among other things. ;-)

Well there are 11 or 12 Bond books to keep us going if all else fails!
I get enmeshed in his book readings - as you say, he does accents so brilliantly that you forget that you aren't listening to a full cast. He even manages to lighten his voice so that you believe the female characters as well even though it is obviously not a female narrator which is no mean feat for a chap with a darker voice. Another thing which also stands out from the general range of narrators is how quickly he reads, the work fairly zips along. I think it is about time I bought another Bond perhaps!

they are another thing that seems to be blocked by licensing. I can't get them in the US or at least I haven't found anywhere yet. bothersome this silly nonsense. Perhaps it's time for a trip!

I ordered them from Penguin, the UK publisher, a few years ago but they seem to be out of print now. I have all of them, but most are audio tape rather than CD. PM me - my mother taught me to share. G xo I share too ;D so when I get them I will be happy to assist! Amazon UK still has them available on cd I think. At last, the US is impacted by the licensing issues - usually I have that problem with a book I really want and it isnt for sale in my location. Makes a nice change ;D OTOH dont let me put you off taking another trip!!!

Thank you both.
bar, I don't have any way to play a tape. I wish I did but I don't and I don't even think you can buy a player anymore.
quoll I just tried to purchase them from Amazon UK and they won't ship them to the US. I suppose I could buy them and have them shipped to you then pick them up later this year. I have actually done that in the past with books.
If there is something you want from the US and can't get it just let me know. There are plenty of things I want from Oz so we can always work out a barter system. Get your list of books together and let me know. I'll bring them when I come down because shipping is absurd on books. The last time I came, I had a case of wine squirreled away in my luggage for a friend in the Blue Mountains.

I have trouble following the storyline with the Bond books. I am so mesmerized by the sound of that deep intoxicating voice and can't concentrate on the story. I must have listened to Casino Royale 4 times and still didn't have a clue what was going on. I have a few of them also Maxx, Amazon.ca still sells both the cd and cassette.

thanks for the tip pr. Amazon.ca let me order them... well two of them. Does anyone have Dr. No or Thunderball? Those are two I'd really love to have. Apparently everyone else would as well since they seem to be impossible to find for any sort of reasonable price.
I like to listen in the car. It takes my mind off the LA traffic.

I have Dr. No The information I have says Thunderball was read by John Kenneth.
Edited at add: Must be an earlier version on cassette I see Amazon has Rufus reading it on the cd.

I should probably add a list of Rufus' audiobooks to the webpage--if I can find one.
