Just one word but the tone of his voice... Remember in TOTS after the honeymoon he enters the office of Kate looking for her. He asks "Where is my woman?" The way he says "woman" tells me more than a cathedral built by words about his/their feelings.

you know, the word "man" has always had a very appealing sound for me in English, but I've never really cared for the pronunciation of "woman," -- until I heard Rufus say it in that scene. All of a sudden, I'd select "woman" as my name if I could just hear him call me that way repeatedly. he's magic with movement and expression and words. I've also wondered, in tots, how many times he had to make that run and the slide down the hallway to make it on to the lift just in time. so fun. such a hint that this big man, who looks even bigger in his fur coat, is really just a big kid.

Oh gosh, I love this thread! So thoughtful and insightful and descriptive! It brings tears to my eyes to read it written so beautifully! I'll add my two cents for a scene I love. It's from Dark City where Mr. Hand has Emma and is threatening her, and at first John tries to deny that it matters to him, but then his face does this terrific change from indignation and denial to a sort of surprised realization and then pain and pleading, then he staggers a little and drops his weapon, even before he says "Don't hurt her, please." It stuck in my mind so much that I had to take a screenshot of it, (the first screenshot I ever took lol) which doesn't really do it justice but you can see the tear in his eye and just... I can't describe it. You guys do it so much better than me.

I think you did it beautifully, annachibi. I love this thread, too, because I love knowing what has affected the other rooftoppers. sometimes it's hard to find the right words to describe the effect he's had on you. you just want to hold your hands out in perfect and open submission to his talent and let the tears slide slowly down your cheeks -- or hug yourself and in delight -- or let your mouth drop open and then go "hot d--n, he's done it again!! I wish I thought "the man" was reading it so he could know what has moved us and how very sensitive we are to the most subtle nuances of his performances. Then I start wondering if he might just say, "H-m-m- had no idea I was doing that -- but I'll do my best to do it again in the future." one of the best excuses in the world for watching his movies over and over again is finding new things to appreciate and realizing those things impacted you before but you didn't even recognize how they were contributing to the message at the time. or, of course, you could just justify watching repeatedly because he is just so adorable.

I was re-watching TOTS yesterday, and this time around, his face when he talked about his "character-building" experience at boarding school was touching me so much. You can see the hurt little boy in the boisterous loud-mouthed man.
And his sweet expression when he first claps eyes on Kate. That's love at first sight.

guess we were having a tots marathon yesterday -- i was introducing daughter no. 2 to it and to the first two installments of tpote. she is so clever -- she picked up on some things i didn't get until the second or third time around. again, things he does make an overall impression on you, but you don't really analyze why or appreciate how well he did it until later. but tots is just full of the most amazing non-verbal language. she especially liked the scene "the morning after" where he realizes he has really stepped in it over the 'virgin' issue and decides to go make breakfast in a hurry. the look on his face is so much fun. i could go on and on about just this movie, but i'd rather hear more 'moving' stuff from y'all. except for one more note: when we were watching tpote, daughter noticed i was really intent over the scene where he leaves the baby. she said, "oh, this is where you noticed he was hot stuff." i said, "no, actually, i fell in lust with him from the first moment he appeared on screen, but this is where i fell in love." i wonder what she went home and posted on her facebook page about her crazy mom!

As I was following the tumblr site, came to our own annachibi's sweet post about the reason she loves Rufus' fans. she calls attention to this thread -- which has been woefully neglected for the past month. I know lots of you have some extra time off during the holidays, so please add your wonderful insights as you fill up that time watching rufus-y stuff again -- or for the first time. I think several new fans have come on board since the last time this thread popped up, so maybe they have new things to contribute. I have gone almost a week now without laying eyes on the sweet boy, but that's coming to an end if i ever get to go home tonight. so I hope to be contributing again tomorrow. thanks, annachibi, for being such a sweety about all of us. we love you, too. Happy New Year, everyone.

anglophile, it may seem strange, but… to me it’s getting harder to choose „cuts” or parts or details of his work fit to this thread. The more and more I am getting to be familiar with his work (sure I cannot be totally), the less and less I think I can separate his verbal and/or non-verbal moments… I can name some of them from time to time when they touch me, and I would cry when I find another gem (inside of a diamond called Rufus)… I would like to choose his whole art instead of only parts of it. So all I can say is that this time I was delighted by two moments. Zen, episode first. The night Tania and Zen are heading to home after the reastaurant dinner. He kisses her on the cheek. After these friendly kisses, he stays close to her for a tiny fraction of the moment… that is so beautiful. Zen, episode second. The early morning kissing scene in the café. As he waits for Tania to arrive to the table with her espresso, and be ready for him… He is like a bomb before exploding. The waiting is full of... desire. Doesn’t talk, doesn’t move, doesn’t look at her, he looks straight down… the only motion when he suddenly holds her arm… then the explosion…

Was doing some "research" for a fanfic tonight and "had" to watch the tpote scene where jack confesses his part in destroying the cathedral to tom. once again, you can see the reality of the tragedy dawn on tom and the spiritual war he goes through as he realizes what a horror has been committed in his name and yet how he has benefited from it. I am struck over and over again by how rufus in the movie makes tom an even more admirable but very human figure than he was in the book. he wants so badly to live in peace and joy with those he loves, just giving his talent back to God. It breaks his heart every time those around him respond to the challenges of the world in such hurtful ways. the world might call tom an "innocent," but I think of him as an angel in human form - always giving others the mercy they need to survive out of his deep well of godly compassion. no wonder he won me over completely in this role.

I've been reading your comments, and in complete agreement, he needn't utter a word it's all in the eyes, I built up the courage to ask for an autograph after seeing him in Rock and Roll a number of years ago, he obliged, of course and our eyes locked, I nearly fainted. Yes those eyes are a wonder to behold.

well, somebody would have been scooping me up off the ground at that point, I'm sure. You have my undying admiration for staying on your feet, girl friend! Just hoping at some point I get to "behold the eyes' in person. Is that really too much to ask?

I recently saw The Woodlanders again, there is so much raw emotion going on it's hard to keep track. The last scene especially, hard to take your eyes off of him, so heart wrenching. I think that's the first thing I noticed about him, aside from his looks, that is. But his eyes express so much that it's nearly impossible to turn away. Not many actors have that ability.
