Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!
And thanks for the suggestions for additional work of his to explore. I had already seen:
Dangerous Beauty (my favorite behind Zen) The Tourist Middlemarch John Adams Paris, Je T'Aime The Holiday Zen (Meraviglioso!!!!) The Illusionist (interesting film, beautiful production design) Amazing Grace
I've now caught up and (thanks to YouTube on some of these) have seen:
TOTS (yowsah!) Charles II (bits and pieces) Carrington (what a strange film - didn't like it) Arabian Nights Cold Comfort Farm Vinyan In a Savage Land (Mick was yummy...what a poignant ending) A Knight's Tale Tristan and Isolde (Oh. Em. Gee.) The Legend of Zorro
Really want to see the Eleventh Hour and Pillars of the Earth series. I started Helen of Troy but didn't finish it because it seemed to be pretty cruel and blood and guts - they eventually sacrifice the daughter, right? (Fast forwarded through Vinyan for the same reason). Is it a worthy enough Rufus performance to watch anyway?

Hi Cricketgirl and welcome!
It looks like you're getting up to speed on Rufus movies etc pretty quickly.
Re Vinyan - I thought this was an exceptional performance as was Downloading Nancy to name but 2. Neither are easy watching though. I expect you've already checked out some of the reviews in the "work of" thread?
For me the top 2 are Taming of the Shrew (TOTS) and Charles 2. You'll find some movies have been cut for the American market so it may pay to check out the individual threads for things such as Martha Meet Frank Daniel & Laurence (The Very Thought of You) to make sure you get the full length version and the full Rufus effect!
Enjoy!

So you've already caught up on many recommendable films. Great to hear that!
Feel free to add further comments on the respective movie threads!
TPOTE is a must-see, too.

! Well done, cricketgirl! Really want to see the Eleventh Hour and Pillars of the Earth series. EH and TPOTE are so so sooooo good!! EH is available through Amazon at around $40 but it's worth every penny. Rufus is so good as Jacob (my favourite modern-day character of Rufus's) and TPOTE is phenomenal. An absolute must-see for every Rufus fan. I started Helen of Troy but didn't finish it because it seemed to be pretty cruel and blood and guts - they eventually sacrifice the daughter, right? (Fast forwarded through Vinyan for the same reason). Is it a worthy enough Rufus performance to watch anyway? To be honest, I fast-forwarded through everything that didn't have Rufus in it (and he's FANTASTIC, especially in the scene where he learns he'll have to sacrifice his daughter and wait until you see him in the water near the end ). I kept getting bored with everything else because I already know the story and I don't know, I just wasn't entertained as much as I thought I'd be. Vinyan, on the other hand was far better than I expected it would be. I understand having to fast-forward through the blood and guts, but that scene was made easier for me when I saw the behind-the-scenes video of how they made that scene. I agree with Nell. Downloading Nancy is also a hard one to watch, but Rufus as Albert truly is an exceptional performance; and Rufus is hilarious in The Very Thought of You (or, Martha Meet Frank, Daniel, and Laurence). Some others to check out are Illuminata (which can be found on Amazon) and A Man of No Importance (which, unfortunately, can only be found on VHS for region-1. I would not have known about this film had it not been for this site and it's now one of my favourite films )

I don't think this has been mentioned yet and it is the thing that convinced me — cerebrally — that Rufus is a dramatic genius. On the fifth anniversary of 9/11, he did a dramatic recitation of a poem for a special production to mark the death of some 67 British citizens in the Towers. As far as I know, it is only available on YouTube in 4 installments listed as "Out of the Blue." Arm yourself with a couple of boxes of tissue. You will never be the same.

Hi anglophile, re: ur post above on "out of the blue" downloaded the actual poem/story then saw the complete film via you tube, cried through most of it. Saw both planes hit while I was at work, will never forget that day nor the days that followed. Seeing him in this made it even more poignant and so tragic. There is something in his eyes and tell so much. It's a very powerful film that should be seen more than once.

you're so right. it should be viewed over and over again and also shown to new audiences all the time. I was able to arrange for high school students here to watch it this year. most of them did not remember the day, of course, and even among those who did, they didn't understand the reality of it. rufus made the horror real. i can think of no higher praise, under the circumstances.

Most people remember where they were when JFK was assassinated my mom was ironing blood red curtains in our apartment. My sister remembers watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, she was not yet 2. Me, I wasn't around for those two events, but I do remember vividly what and where I was when I heard that John Lennon had been murdered and of course 9/11. All generations have their tragedies, b/c of Mr. Sewell's fine attention to detail, and that of the director make this work so powerful and should be archived for all future generations. Kudos to you for having your students view this. I realize as the years pass that there are kids out there who will never know what an LP or 45 is or tv without a remote it is up to the previous generations to teach them.
