Really nice interview.
I just wonder how can it be that someone mistakes Rufus for being Joaquin Phoenix. I mean, although JP is a wonderful, intense actor also, that isn't visible in normal life situation and isn't he kind of really short, at least in Gladiator he was way shorter than Russel Crowe. Funny. It must be the hair or something like that.

I have to wonder about that myself. The only comparison I can make is that they're both Caucasian males with black hair. As to why Roof thinks he has ever been as large as JP, I can only assume he has a distorted self image when it comes to his weight. Maybe that's why he gets too thin sometimes.

lol! Well that's easy, because people are ding bats. Speaking as a person who has been 'recognized' as several very high profile people over the years to whom I pay almost no resembalance I can tell you that most people don't look or listen. Rufus is an exception but most film actors are exactly in real life who they are on film. You couldn't miss them. As an actor who seeks to loose himself in his roles he should be flattered. He should also be flattered because he has 10 years on Joaquin Phoenix and when Phoenix isn't being a drunken sot he is quite a handsome man and not a half bad actor if you like the neurotic out of control type.

Maxx.........are you saying that Rufus doesn't look anything like what we see onscreen or he doesn't ACT like anything we see onscreen???
I didn't get the comparison to JP either.........I enjoy Joaquin's films usually (not all of them) and I think he's a credible actor........but he's nothing like Rufus, not in talent, not in stature, and certainly not in looks (at least not to me). Maybe, ocassionally the hair, but even that is different most of the time!

Maxx.........are you saying that Rufus doesn't look anything like what we see onscreen or he doesn't ACT like anything we see onscreen??? uh, I think my point was that Rufus is such a cameleon that you might not recognize him from his screen roles. But I said that waaaaaaaaaay this morning. You're expecting me to remember an awful lot. Oh I "get" it. I just think you'd have to be terribly unobservant to make it. However, to put it into perspective, the pilot had probably seen Gladiator. He'd probably never actually seen one of Rufus' films unless he happened to be a scifi fan and saw Dark City. It's not too much of a stretch. Rufus doesn't exactly make films that Joe-average is going to know.

I'll go against the crowd here and risk sounding like a total idiot BUT the first time I saw Gladiator I thought it was Ruf. It was the eyes, the hair and the dark, smoldering baddie aspect of the character that did it. By the time I got around to seeing it again - after seeing Ruf in something else, I realized it wasn't the same guy. In my defense I will say at the time I didn't have a clue who Ruf was - I didn't figure that out till I saw T&I a couple months ago.

Ah well see? If you didn't KNOW Ruf, you can't be expected to know what he looks like! I was never like that about Rufus, because I watched AKT over and over and over.......I had his face ingrained on my brain! But I have done that with other actors that look similar!
I guess after seeing JP so much and Rufus so much, I just don't see the resemblance......but I just asked hubby and he said he can see how someone might get them confused......he said the same thing, the hair and the eyes, as long as there isn't a closeup of Ruf's eyes. He said in a closeup.......they are an entity all their own (he notices his odd eye, I don't, and how green they are is unique).

Ian McShane.
I know someone who confused Rufus and Ian McShane. They do resemble each other if you ignore the vast age difference. If you put a photo of each of them next to one another as young men they look very similar. When they start to move it all evaporates. And of course IM is much smaller than Rufus, and has an entirely different personality and acting style.

I've seen that comparison..........I sort of see it, with a much younger McShane. He does kind of have that look.

See that was the first thing I'd seen JP in and I'd watched Knight's Tale a couple of times but didn't even notice Ruf - my mind just blanked out that evil, vile character and was too busy drooling over Purefoy!

Just for the sake of curiosity..... could someone post a picture of each side by side? I have always wondered where the similarities were because I can't see it....... but maybe we could have a vote?

I became curious and looked some photograps, which I'm not able to post, and I did find something that solved the dilemma! No RS and JP don't look much the same, it's only the fact that they are dark with curly hair. But instead, it's a cosmic thing, they are born on following days, JP 28.10, some years earlier but anyway. So they must carry some kind of scorpio-aura that fools people, don't you think, it just has to be so ....... ;D
