Finally watched my DVD. Agree with the reviews others have made. It was very dark (lighting) and hard to see what was happening. As Nell mentioned, you could not see who was doing it (I get that) but you couldn't see what was done. So the DVD was not better than the online version in that respect. Rufus is handsome. That's about all I can say on this one.

My DVD arrived . I watched it yesterday morning in case it was very scary I wasn't expecting too much from this film and I did enjoy watching it much to my surprise. Rufus was excellent and played the caring father so well. He gave the film some credibility, which isn't an easy thing to do!

He gave the film some credibility, which isn't an easy thing to do! I do not usual watch this sort of thing. It is amazing how my tastes have broadened over the last few years. But for Rufus I have seem films and read books I would not have dreamed of a few years ago. Like Lassie, I wasn't expecting too much and again like her, I did enjoy it. Rufus as usual was excellent. I have read reviews which say rather patronisingly, that the writers guessed the end. I didn't !

I saw this a few weeks back and, quite frankly, found it banal - to say I'm not a fan of the genre. The story tried to be original, but lacked real finesse. There were the obvious red herrings & jump scares that are an industry requirement it would seem. But, there was one redeeming factor, and I don't think I really need to say what (or rather, who) that was. I had hoped, for once, that he would turn out to be the true hero and run in & save the day, the way the film seemed to be playing out in the middle definitely leant itself to that opportunity, but then it went completely off kilter back to the original drommelkind plotline... Although, I feel there was an alternative ending to the one given in the final edit of the film. I don't know if anyone here has thrown this theory into the discussion, but one of the photos that I found floating around online appears to show Jacob (Rufus) being led away in handcuffs...could he have been the original murderer? No sign of a messy fight, or final killing spree, but to me that looks like Jacob (Rufus) being led away in handcuffs by the county's sheriff. The writers, or editors, obviously felt that this wasn't the way to go, what with Jacob being a sceptic to the whole drommelkind legend for the best part of the film, and cut it. But, the image remains as evidence. From my recollection, Jacob is never led away by the sheriff. He arrives with the sheriff & paramedics to save his daughter, because he feels that she needs modern medical help. Then, he seemingly disappears. He's not even present at his daughter's side in the hospital, and I wonder if this is why. They shot this scene, and then changed the plot without getting Rufus back to change Jacob's ending...

That's interesting. Could be a deleted scene. Maybe he was a suspect or being lead away for hiding the girl. Nice find.

I had noticed that he had sort of disappeared !! I was thinking in bed... ( I do all my best thinking in bed!)and I thought perhaps that she had killed him too. There are loads of questions needing answers, here's another ... If he did not agree with the minister and his teachings... why didn't he go with his 1st wife when she was shunned? Can you think of any others?

My theories? Hmm... 1. Susan was shunned, so Jacob couldn't go with her - he had to act as though she was dead, if he was to appease the elders. 2. The photo I posted suggests there's a cut scene, if not an alternate ending where Jacob is the killer, or he at least killed Elder Beacon while defending his daughter. 3a. Susan told him to go home to rest and wait for news on Mary, seeing how she was there at the hospital with her - but that just leaves more questions... 3b. He was there, we just have to assume in the waiting room instead of Mary's. 3c. Susan convinced Jacob to flee and abandon his daughter. (I'm not accepting that one myself, he didn't seem the type of father to do that...) 3d. Susan killed Jacob... As for the questions brought up by point 3a, would Susan want her ex-husband dead (knowing what Mary would likely become, and where she would probably head first)? And, why would she want him dead in the first place? I mean, he did follow the commands of the elders and shun her, but that's hardly worthy of warranting his murder by your satanic bride of a daughter. He did also take a 2nd wife & started a family with her, but again... to the murderous revenge! This film offered up too many questions and not enough answers, to be honest.

I've had my DVD for awhile and finally watched it. I have to say that I honestly think this is the worst movie Rufus has even been in. As artisanlibra pointed out above, every single cliché of the horror movie genre was present. Nubile young girls swimming half naked to be discovered by boys? Check. Running off alone when it makes more sense to stick together? Check. Going into the creepy house/barn and not calling police? Check. I'm also wondering if lots of Rufus's footage ended up on the cutting room floor? His name was listed first in the credits and frankly, he's the biggest name attached to this vehicle so I was surprised at how little screen time he actually had.
But I still can't figure out why Jacob would stay. It makes no sense except for the fact that if he had left, there'd have been no movie! I mean it, the elder wants to kill his daughter. He has to know, or at the very least suspect, that the girls would be marked growing up and that people would treat them weirdly. I'm sorry but as a parent if I thought someone wanted to harm my child I'd grab the kid and get the hell out of Dodge. And Susan said she wanted to take Mary with her but the elders forbade it. Why? If they thought there was a chance she'd grow up to be the devil's handmaid, why not get rid of her?
Oh well, I could go on and on. I mean, I know that when watching a movie or reading a book you have to have a "willing suspension of disbelief" but things have to make sense internally. This movie had plot holes you could drive a truck through.

I haven't rushed to watch this, so I'm interested to read your reviews. I didn't expect it to be great, but I'm sorry to hear that it doesn't even follow its own internal logic. Too bad. Thanks for sharing your opinions, everyone!
