You guys were so encouraging when I mentioned my dream of coming to England to write, and now my family has added their support, my friends have not deserted me and my boss has agreed to let me take a 2-month leave of absence, so --- unless something I'm not expecting happens, I'm hoping to arrive in London (probably) the first week in June, spend a month to weeks there doing daily intensive writing on a book (it terrifies me to even say the words, but the more I repeat them, the more I feel I've committed myself to at least trying this) and then move on to Edinburgh to a University of New Orleans-sponsored summer writing workshop. Two are offered, and depending on which one I ultimately settle on, I would be involved in that for 2-4 weeks and then I would head back to the real world. If I can't find lodging I can afford in London, I'm open to other places to stay, so if you have suggestions, please let me know. The real purpose of this notice, though, is to see if there is anyone on other side of the pond who wants to try to get together during June. I don't know how you've set these up in the past, but I suppose if I can actually pull this off, I could be open to just about anytime in the month. Hoping to hear from lots of you -- and hoping this actually all really works out. And if anyone on this side of the pond wants to go, let me know. You'll just have to be willing to eat and sleep cheap and crack a whip to make me write copiously every day.

Awww, how exciting that you'll really get to go! Fingers crossed that you'll find some affordable place to live I don't think there's much chance for me to be in the UK any time soon, but I'll definitely give you a shout if that changes!

These are great news anglo and I hope you will get a chance to go to England and have a chance meet up some Rooftoppers - unfortunately I will be in London in May and in September, so I don't think that we have a chance ... sadly, but true ... sniff sniff

, anglo!! How very exciting! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can find a place to stay in/near London. As one who has set up a couple of Rooftop Meet-ups in London, the best way is to just start a thread once you know when exactly you'll be there and which dates would work best. Both times we met for lunch on a Saturday at Cosmoba restaurant which is very centrally located and owned by the family of our very own Rooftopper, ruthie2910. I'm SO excited for you!!!

Anglo,
June?? So I'm being stood up for our date with ALVH??? Aah, I don't blame you, I'd stand me up for a chance to go back to London, too.
And your writing cover story is great, but we all know what you're REALLY going to the UK for!! (Kidding, can't want to read what you come up with!!)
OOH, I just had a thought, when are the olympics?? Will they be over by then?? If not, I think you want to stay as faaaar away from London as possible, I heard when I was there they are expecting a real mess.
Anyway, I hope this trip ends up being everything you hope it will be!

You are all so very, very sweet. I just want to gather you all up and take you with me and it would be perfect. Sometime between now and then, I have to get better at dealing with technology so I can stay in touch. I should be out of England by the end of June and on to Edinburgh. The writing conference there begins with a welcome on Saturday, June 30. Then at the end of July, I'll be heading home. Hopefully with a book either completed or almost done and some vastly improved writing skills and some knowledge of how to proceed once the book is finished. It feels so strange to even talk about "book," although I've been writing for years. A book is a very different animal than newspaper feature writing, as some of you know who have made the leap. You have my admiration. You are all such a talented and kind group of ladies who have enriched my life greatly over the past seven months. Thank you.
