Greeting dear sisters ... Sorry to hijack this topic but I've been thinking about this for a while ... As you wonderful people have seen more RS goodness than I have yet dreamed of, could you choose ONE film that would best express RS fullest range of skills ... I know that our dear Rufus will be thrilling us all for some time but if you could possibly recommend one film that would best expresses his finest range as an actor what would it be? I was discussing this with another chum about another actor and we got into the most delightful discussion - and as the Rooftoppers are among the prettiest and wittiest fans I know - I was looking for your insights. Is it possible to see him run the gamut in one film? Love Kq

Kern -- well, you've posed an interesting point and one that will provoke a lot of discussion, I'm sure. there may well be just such a one-shot film, but my most immediate reaction is this -- Rufus certainly has the talent, range, will and ability to blend all his many gifts within the scope of one production, but I'm not sure a director has ever allowed him to do this sufficiently. (wouldn't that end up being a blockbuster?!!) I will give this deep thought and 'force' myself to do a thorough mind review of his work (since I'm bereft of his actual work at the moment) and give you my nomination as soon as possible. I'm sure you'll receive many more in the meantime. and, by the way, what would you suggest the winner should be?

(KQ, I've moved these over from the I Just... thread as they are directly about Rufus and his work)

Thank you to GE2 (for relocating my request) and Anglophile for your generous response! As you good ladies have seen so very much more of RF's work both on stage and screen - I was just curious about any examples of his remarkable range that you might suggest. Being still so new to the Wonderful world of Rufus - its hard for me to say my nomination - at this point I might suggest Charles II but I would love to see Victory or Vinyan or Downloading Nancy as I gather those are remarkable works - my heart will always be King Marc's - hence my immodest title here. I just woke from a dreadful dream about Mr. Franco so chatting about a truly talented actor is quite soothing just now.

I just woke from a dreadful dream about Mr. Franco so chatting about a truly talented actor is quite soothing just now. OMG, I hope it was not too traumatic ;D Even in the most underwritten and/or small roles, Rufus always shines by not just playing the character but making him a figure you can care about, giving even (most of) his villains a certain depth that makes you wonder just how they became the way they are. One of his strongest performances is certainly "Charles II". In those four episodes, he gets to show his full versatility as the title character goes from young exiled prince to old and weary king. It's a really amazing display of his talent how he portrays that flamboyant historical figure with all his facets - cheeky, naughty, thoughtful, depressed, embattled, regal (and oh so sad as you see his strength fade towards the end).

An ax would be the perfect instrument to get rid of wood-faces, wouldn't it? ;D

Kq , I don't think you could see him ( to quote you ) 'run the gamut ' in one film I must say Charles II comes quite close; with him ageing from a 30 to 56 The range of emotions is great but to see him play what he considers his forte, comedy then it is TOTS every time . From buffoonery to vulnerability. See the scene where he asks Kate if she regrets not asking him to sign a prenup and watch his eyes if you are asking about Rufus's performances . One film regularly overlooked is Victory usually because the subject is a bit hard. His work in this is outstanding. See our reviews about this Particularly Bluehorse's Replies#50 and 53 and if you would like to read my own. #54
I hope this has given you something to begin with.

Thank you Francesca...I have been looking high and low for Victory and your comments are only inspiring me to redouble my efforts! I've struggled with The Honest Courtesan (Dangerous Beauty) and have loved Iluminata, T&I, The Woodlanders, Charles II TPOTE, She Creature, even Arabian Nights, ToTS and ALVK,and I may watch KT next or finish up Pillars... but now I know I will not give up until I have Victory!

Girls I think that's the most difficult question that I've never even asked myself before and it feels a bit weird now! I have the answer though.I believe Rufus's best performance was in TOTS.I have my reasons, believe me. Besides his general perfection,he gave something else, something new to a character that's been played a million times before and had to be adjusted to our time. For someone else that could be confusing,no? He had that raciness, that sparks in the moves, looks, those tricky-melodic-smouldering voice ups and downs we all love and thankfully the writer re-created a masterpiece role for him with lines you wish someone will tell you someday in your life or you'll the one who will.Plus,it was one of the few times, the character-role was so complete. I will never manage to think of anything more perfect for him. When I saw TOTS I knew I wasn't crazy for believing so much in him,but others who couldn't were just so cursed!

I think we all have faves for different reasons. I really enjoyed TOTS because it was different from what I had seen him in. Mostly I knew him from EH in the beginning. I think he shows something different in everything. I can say I have always enjoyed his perrformance even if I did not like the film.

Friends you are all fantastic! THANK YOU!
...For me it's not the favorite movie but the movie/performance in a play or program that best shows his range as an actor - how he can move from sympathy to unsympathetic, cruel to kind, and how this is revealed as growing through the process of a film as if you were somehow not 'seeing a performance' but as if you were somehow a secret witness... Arrggghhh! I'm not an actor so I don't know how to explain this... Regarding the discussion that inspired this - about another actor in another film - what was that actors most stunning performance ... I found that the most expressive film in that case was not my favorite film of actor X - but a movie I find very painful to watch - a stunning, disturbing movie, but a movie that was remarkable and shocking in its depth and power...
Maybe Rufus has not yet been challenged fully or maybe his range is too powerful for one film.
I am so grateful for all your feedback!

In terms of versatility, I think Illuminata is another very good example. He gets to show quite a range of moods and emotions in this, going from a somewhat full-of-himself arrogance to a heartbreakingly moving performance in Tuccio's play.

I'd vote for Downloading Nancy. It's a hard film to watch but Rufus gives an amazing performance as Albert. He takes a man it would be easy to loathe and makes you feel sorry for him. His Albert it a deeply flawed man, but there moments where you have to wonder - did he make Nancy what she is or did Nancy make him what he is?
