Dear RS Friends
Thanks to your thoughtfulness and wonderful feedback on this topic - I'm starting to see Rufus' stunning acting range. I was thinking about 'Victory' and 'Woodlanders' recently and they suddenly struck me as the sort of films I've been looking for in my quest for films that show just what a remarkable actor RS really is ....
As I initially noted - I was looking for the Rufus equivalent to gut wrenching but subtle films such as 'Open Hearts' or 'Prag' two shattering films by Mads Mikkelsen (my other perversion). {Please see these film if you can - they will delight and break your hearts in the best possible way!}
I see MM and RS as two contemporary actors who are both beautiful and also very intelligent craftsmen at acting but are not appreciated as they should be.
'Woodlanders' as so many people here have noted is all about the eyes and the unspoken statements that are still palpable in a subtle glance, the movement of a hand, a shrug or the simplest motion pain fear passion agony love or loss. This is 'Woodlanders' - This is also 'Prag'
'Victory' has RS as his most spastic and disturbing - he's wired, twitching and terrible - the killer man child, and this performance is so profoundly like the surreal mute warrior One Eye from 'Valhalla Rising' he's devoid of emotions and expressions yet he's entirely in the moment.
I am not suggesting that either actor is in anyway mimicking the style of the other and I'm so sorry if this seems to be a nonsensical rant ...I'm just getting so charmed by Rufus' skill and subtlety that I find myself sometimes just thinking over and over just how disturbing, moving, shocking and profound his work can be...and then wondering why he hasn't gotten the respect and deference he so richly deserves!
I will always love 'T&I' best of Rufus' works (well whats my name?) just as I adore MM in 'Flame and Citron'. Both are films about war, betrayal and doing the right thing even when you really don't know what that is, or you really don't want to do it because it will destroy you... the fact that one film is about Denmark in the Second World War and one is a Dark Age Arthurian romance makes no real difference.
I still wish that someone would cast these two actors in a dry but witty comedy - maybe a Woody Allen film about love and suffering and whimsy a modern comedy of errors...
Thanks for tolerating my rant!
love kq

"Killer man child" sums up Martin pretty well. I have only seen Victory once so far but really need to re-view it because it was just such an accomplished performance by a still very young Rufus. Creepy, scary, and still he managed to make me feel for him, made me sure that there was a reason why this young man had become such a twisted personality.

His range is unbelievable. I think that is why I always enjoy him in every role even if I dont like the film so much.

'Parades End' is a great example of RS in a role performed well, with layered subtlety and wit!
