I loved this bit: Thelma is, of course, Thelma Holt, the legendary producer, who is responsible for orchestrating this new version (at London's Queen's Theatre from 24 February). Quite fittingly, considering the play's emphasis on signs and portents, the casting came to her in a dream. 'You can't do this play until you have an actor, darling,' she says. 'I knew I was going to do Macbeth next, and I was preoccupied with it. Then one night I dreamed about Rufus. We were on the Serpentine and he was rowing. I got a close-up of his face and he was terribly annoyed with me; I didn't know why. And the next morning, I came into the office and said, "I know who should play Macbeth - Rufus Sewell!" and Sweetpea [Thelma's assistant, who changed her name from Jane by deed poll] waved a piece of paper and said, "But he wants to play it; he's just said so, in this interview."'Thanks, Nell - pity this play didn't get good reviews.

Fabulous, thanks, Nell! I also loved the bit about the dream. And I couldn't agree more with Rufus on "Shakespeare with mobile phones"!

It is always soooo good to read this sort of articles. When the creators are in the middle of a project, I can sense their enthusiasm of creating something. (Like at the 'Making of' video of Zen - everybody talked about their work with great passion. Yes, the movie-promoting interviews are good, too, but they have a different nature because of the distance.) "Crowley - who says that Sewell 'is a very untechnical actor, a bit like a street fighter: he's very fast and quickwitted and will not please the iambic fundamentalists, but by God you know why he's saying what he's saying' - shares Holt's vision of the play."Do you remember that black and white photo taken before a Macbeth performance? I think it shows that feeling. (This page has some other Simon Annand photographs as well, I think it's very very interesting: everyday-i-show.livejournal.com/130821.html ) "exchanging Big Hugs with Sewell" - yes, I am not surprised the journalist was impressed. Rufus has a very special style of hugging: he pulls the other to himself, it looks really warm. And when he does it in films - Charles hugging his brother or Buckingham…woof woof. Thanks, Nell.

Thanks, Nell! What a great article! I like reading older articles because you see that he was as candid and thoughtful in his responses then as he is now--obviously, he must have changed or grown over the years like everyone does, but fundamentally it seems like he has maintained his true character, which must be hard to do when you have any degree of fame. . And I couldn't agree more with Rufus on "Shakespeare with mobile phones"! Unless it's Petruchio.

Great article, I love that Thelma Holt dreamed of Rufus - we all do that don't we?
