I agree with Rueful's summation - a beautiful piece of work but not one character you could really root for or care about. I mean, at one point or another I just wanted to slap all of them silly!
Mark and Christopher really did have a love/hate relationship - Mark encouraged the gossip and then was shocked, shocked!, when their father committed suicide. He first befriends Valentine because he hates Sylvia, but then when Christopher brings Valentine to his lodgings he acts all offended that C would bring "that girl" to his home. Which by the way, he is sharing with his mistress! Never could figure that character out.
Rueful wrote:
I snorted at that also - and wondered if she was always looking at him as her escape hatch. Remember how she was scheming to get him named Viceroy of India after the war was over?
I look upon Parade's End much like The Holiday. A very small role for Rufus (and after all - even Rufus said it was a cameo role.) so I might buy the DVD only if it comes out in the bargain bin of the local store.

Never could figure that character out. Exactly...very strange behavior. Maybe his motivations were clearer in the book (or got left on the cutting room floor). Great point, Joyce! I had forgotten about that. That would definitely have been in character for her.

HEY, Stranger! Welcome back!
It aired on BBC, not in the US. Some people (ahem) outside the UK might have watched it using Expat Shield, which gives them a British internet address.
I think it will be playing on HBO this winter though!

We miss you too!
That's too bad about PE! I hope you'll get a chance soon. Rufus was great, and though I had a few issues with the characters (detailed in my usual blabby way earlier), I thought it was worth watching.

Great to see you on board, tip! I haven't been able to watch the whole thing either (in fact, I only saw the Rufus bit of the first episode) because it came at a bad time for me - I hope I will get my DVD this week, though, so that I can finally catch up with this thread.

I was disappointed Rufus has such a small role, but ended up loving Parade's End. Would you believe I'm not naturally a Benedict Cumberbatch fan? But he was good in PE (and Sherlock). Beautifully, carefully filmed, about a strange period in history. I think I'll order the dvd too.
