Now here's a quirky thing.....I was up at the Public Records Archive at Kew yesterday, poking around my ancestry (as you do). Anyway, I decided to have a look at El Roof's birth record and discovered that his middle name is spelt 'Frederik'. Now, this is a seemingly pointless bit of trivia, and could also be a typo on the microfische, but I thought it interesting enough to post here. Either that, or I am exceedingly bored........you decide.

Ruthy, you didn't happen to notice a time of birth, did you? My sister's mother-in-law is an arch astrologer. I may be able to get her to do his chart (!). I just know they always need a birth time to get the rising sign right, or something like that.

How were you able to get a hold of it? Do they just let you look at it?

No, no time of birth. This stuff is in the public domain and freely available to anyone who wants to look at it. It isn't as detailed as a birth certificate, as it only gives name, place of birth (Hammersmith-Queen Charlotte's possibly?) and mother's maiden name (strangely listed as Sewell) but anyone can get hold of a copy birth certificate for anyone listed for a fee of about £5. That's why genealogy is such an expensive pursuit. To be honest, I wanted to see if it listed an address as, coming from the next town to me and being the same age, I wondered where he had lived in Twickenham as a child. Pure curiosity, plus you can get carried away in that place.

I think Frederik is a very old way of spelling the name. Are there are any artist's with that name & spelling? His father may have been trying to honor someone whos work he admired.
If I was where you are, Ruthy I would be poking about too.

I think it was a typo - my birth certificate says my father was born in Venus. I like to think these things are typo's. If not, it would explain alot.

Typo or not, if it's not been corrected, it stands! At least that's how it is here in the US. My dad always thought his first name was Allen, so did my Grandma! But when he went in to the Air Force after high school........his birth cert. said Alvin and that's what the military used and that's been his legal name the rest of his life! (Everyone called him by his middle name, so it never came up until they needed his birth certificate).
It wouldn't surprise me to learn that his parents did spell it differently.........they are artists!

Just noticed that Rufus' entry on Wikipedia now lists him as Rufus 'Frederik' Sewell. I'm sure it was previously spelt with the usual 'c'. Anyone observant enough to remember? Maybe it's been recently changed but if so, I wonder who initiated it? Maybe we need to ask him and then he'll know how obsessed we all are and be very, very scared.
