I thought it would be fun to talk about some of Rufus' favorite things. Go to www.aboutrufus.com/news.htm and go down to Feb 12, 2005 and you'll find some of the things Ruf likes. Now, as I love the radio show "This American Life" and one of my fav movies of all time is "A Matter of Life and Death" imdb.com/title/tt0038733/ it found this very interesting. Of course, I couldn't help thinking what good taste Rufus has. ;D Also, its an interesting insight into what might inspire him as an artist. It makes me think he likes very smart and offbeat stuff. Anyone else want to speculate further??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Telegraph Magazine Arts Telegraph Saturday, 12 February 2005 Favorite films:A Matter of Life and Death Being There Bedknobs and Broomsticks Survival kit: 'An iPod loaded with a radio documentary programme called This American Life ; travel books by Norman Lewis (and omitted from the original quote) 'and me Crack-Pipe.' www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts//slideshows/bafta/upixbafta.xml&sSheet=/arts/2005/02/12/ixfilmmain.html

well, hum... Powell and Pressburger, eh? quirky, interesting, intellegent, colourful, often sexy... in the end of that film love conquers all... pretty romantic stuff. I haven't seen bedknobs and broomsticks in years. intellectual twisted child? This is kind of fun. We should play it for ourselves afterward. (Being There is a film netflix insistantly recommends I view. That creeps me out a bit a lot.)

Ruf just might be a hopeless romantic! I don't know how I missed seeing a Disney movie when I was a kid, but I did. I've never seen this one. I think "gifted" is the word you are looking for. But aren't we already? ;D

I've read that his favorite horror film is "Don't Look Now."
Released in 1973, It stars Donald Sutherland & Julie Christie. I suspect this movie may have been the catalyst for Ruf's admiration of tall, thin, blondes.
I've seen "Being There" and enjoyed it too. Peter Sellers was wonderful as Chance the Gardener. These are both films worth watching.

This is a fun thread, I bet combing through interviews would reveal more favorites. I'm there with Ruf on some of it, just off by a couple degrees on his other favs. Bedknobs and Broomsticks was the bomb--I loved that movie as a kid, too. So fantastical--kids going on their own adventure. Being There was a great movie, esp the part where Chance says "I like to watch" and then Shirley Maclaine goes at herself-HA! Never heard of A Matter of Life and Death--I'll have to file it under "Ruf Recomends" and check it out sometime. It is a pity that network tv (I don't have cable) does not show the old classics late at night as much as they used to--now it's all stupid infomercials-gag! I have fond memories of watching them late into the night with an old beau - after naughty time of course. Near Misses: Never have listened to "This American Life", I can recommend to music lovers one of my fav programs "American Routes" from New Orleans, broadcast by Public Radio International--I listen to it on my favorite radio station on 89.3 FM "The Current" which is part of Minnesota Public Radio. American Routes tells about (and programs songs from) all sorts of roots music like the blues, cajun, folk, early pop, jazz, etc. I have heard really cool stuff on there that I've never heard anywhere else.
Don't Look Now is Ruf's fav horror film, huh? I'll have to check that out, too. I have always been a Donald Sutherland fan. The movie of his that really got me though, is called "Eye of the Needle" It takes place during WWII and he plays this spy called "The Needle" who is trying to get info he collected of Allied plans to Germany. He ends up on this lighthouse with a lonely woman and her crippled husband. He is sooo good in it. He does super-creepy in such a good way. I haven't seen it in years, so I don't know how it holds up overall, but if you're a big Sutherland fan, it's a must see. I wonder what Ruf's favorite music group growing up was, or what he likes now. Anybody Know? I was a huge Who fan growing up, myself. I'm convinced I have permanent hearing damage from lying on the floor, speakers on either side, and cranking it. I didn't have "me crack pipe", but as it was the seventies, you know.

He was, and presumably still is, a David Bowie fan. Clearly his taste for the finer things in life (if not his prowess with the peroxide bottle) was developed at a very early age.

I'm not surprised he likes such a unique talent as David Bowie. That seems in keeping with his free spirit yet intellectual bent.
Oh! Also, in reading the synopsis of "Don't Look Now", I thought it's no wonder Rufus was interested in the "Vinyan" project, as there is a common thread in both stories about a couple with a lost loved one that have a strong encounter with the spirit world. I'm sure there was more to picking Vinyan than that, heartrending searches in the aftermath of a tsunami being both a current and compelling topic, and there's probably a really well-written script involved, etc., but I thought that spirit link was an interesting similarity to his fav thriller.

His bro Caspar is also in a local band, Grand Union. I'm sure Rufus is a keen supporter as he used to play drums with Caspar in bands around his home town. I think they're an Indie, folky and slightly jazz-influenced type of outfit. They play my old local from time to time I believe, but I've not been able to catch them yet.

I know, I always am surprised when an actor I like has a brain. Why IS that? (*shrug*) Although it is still a bit on the snobby for my criteria of intelligence to be that they like what I like. Or does that just make me human? Okay, a question here for you long time Rufers. Since Ruf is about the same age as me, I was joking on another thread about wondering if Ruf like the Brit band The Smiths when he was in his late teens/ early 20's, like I did. I totally see him being the type who was into what we called "New Wave" but what is now called alternative rock. So seriously, what bands/music has he mentioned liking over the years? Has he ever talked about his tastes in music at all?

Rufus mentioned buying an album by 'Kings of Convenience'. I read this in an article on the site Vue2sewell. In archive articles section - My London - Evening Standard - 26 May 2006.
