Ridley Scott has a gorgeous intensity and gives his actors a great deal of creative freedom. His work is also very emotional, it's often just on a bit grander scale. Black Hawk Down for instance. But for smaller fare there is always Thema and Louise. He also has amazing instincts about actors and what they are capable of. I repeat, Ridley Scott doesn't really float my boat. You don't have to convince me, Maxx ;D I've not seen any of Alejandro González Iñárritu's films so can't say.

And what about The Coen Brothers? Excellent idea, that could be really fun and quirky!

My number one director I'd like to see ALL of my favorite actors/actresses work with (inculding Ruf) is the same as Maxx: Ridley Scott. To me, he is the greatest living film director(with Peter Weir a not so distant second.) I think a lot of people overlook what a great director Ridley is and just focus on how gorgeous his movies are. But he has a great command of story, tone, actors, everything! Yeah, he's made some clunkers right along with his best films, but that's one of the things I admire most about him, he'll go out on a limb and try something, even if he fails at it. Not many directors have the balls (or the power) to do that nowadays. Other I'd like to see Ruf work with, who have made some of my favorite films are: - Alfonso Cuarón (A Little Princess, Prisoner of Azkaban)
- Gillian Armstrong (Oscar & Lucinda, My Brilliant Career)
- Jane Campion (The Piano, In the Cut)
- Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, The End of the Affair)
- Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights; Magnolia)
- Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Year of Living Dangerously, Master & Commander)
- Stephen Frears (Prick Up Your Ears, The Grifters, The Queen)
Shameless bit of self promotion disclosure: ;D For anyone who is interested, I have a Live Journal fan list I'm trying to get going for fans of Ridley Scott. We could use more devoted Ridley-atics, so feel free to join if you are one (I told you I was going to be shameless....): community.livejournal.com/ridley_fans/

Steven Soderbergh: has done Traffic, Syriana and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, just to name his best known commercial successes. Look what he did for Benicio del Toro ( mind you, he's gone the Oscar curse route since, but was my last favorite actor before ROOF).

[/li][li]Jane Campion (The Piano, In the Cut) [/quote] , , , now there is match made in heaven. Rufus working with Jane Campion might alter the trajectory of both of their careers. She is one of my very favorite directors because I think she portrays women the way they really are, not a prettied up Hollyweird version, but real women, real sex, gritty real life. And in turn she portrays men the way they can be at their very best, still raw and real but connected to the women in their lives instead of simply "wearing them" as an accessory. I would LOVE to see Rufus work with her. OHBOYOHBOYOHBOYOHBOY! I just love this idea. Write Rufus! Write Jane Campion... etb, you've given me something to chew on for the rest of the day.

Sarah Polley's first film, Away from Her, has probably not opened in the UK yet. ITs Sarah's first behind the camera and is outstanding in how it portrays an aging woman with Alzheimer's(played by an incandescent Julie CHristie, looking more exquisite than ever, if that's humanly possible). ITs about the relationship with herself, as well as her husband of many years, Gordon Pinsent.Sarah Polley, an actress herself, is an actor's dream!!!!Christie is bound to get another Oscar for her portrayal....its beyond acting.I've never seen anything like it.

I certainly hope Sarah Polley is a better director than she is an actress.

But what about Richard Roxburgh? What's so great about him in particular? Is this lust or love?

Guess not ;D I'm not much into defending, I'm more into stating and gushing. lol! No! I had no idea... Well let's see. Um, first, he's an actor very much like Rufus in that he approaches a role from honesty and emotion. Like Rufus he has an avant garde approach to a character and always makes an impression no matter how small the role. His characters, like Rufus' seem to live and breathe beyond the context of the piece. He's not quite as transparent as Rufus is emotionally but I suspect he's not quite as gregarious as Rufus is, either. He's a great master of the art of stillness which is something I've enjoyed so much in Rufus' work in the last few years. It can be a very effective technique if used well. I've seen some of his work directing actors on stage. I'm anxiously awaiting his first film debut which came out last week in Australia to mostly positive but mixed reviews. As a director actors love him. He knows just when to kick them into gear and when to leave them alone to be creative. They just seem to be two people who would complement each other nicely either as actors or as director and actor. Is it love or lust... hum, well I'm flying to Australia later this year to see him on stage so it's probably love. I can't waste that much time or spend that much money on a cheap fling. ;D

Since my favorite director of all time is Pedro Almodovar, I would love to see Ruf working with him (it's never too late to learn Spanish, Ruf!). Back when Antonio Banderas was a real actor, he did great work with Almodovar.
