Ridley Scott Ridley Scott Ridley Scott
Richard Roxburgh
Alejandro González Iñárritu - this one would be a match made in heaven but the picture might never get finished because the devil is in the details.
David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg You? Maxx, you know I fully agree: Ridley Scott is the best! It'd have been wonderful to see Rufus' comic side playing a Billy Wilder's farce film. David Lynch and Christopher Nolan are a challenge. Peter Jackson for fantastic story? Why not!

OK, OK, Ridley Scott found the money for it so I'm pretty sure he would've had some input.

yeah it looks like a Ridley Scott film. Ridley wanted to direct it about 15 years ago. But I'd still like him to actually work with Ridley Scott. I love RS films. They have a gorgeous attention to detail that I'd like to see with Rufus' gorgeous attention to detail. It would be heaven.

SAM MENDES, Joe Wright (again), Mike Nichols, Anthony Minghella.
Scorsese because Rufus would probably be thrilled.

Which is to say what is that you like about his directing that you think would particularly suit Rufus? Agreed on Mike Nichols. I'd love to see that. That would be up there with Ridley Scott for me. Scorsese? Has Rufus mentioned him? I think he's terribly overrated, but to each his own I guess.

Character driven stuff. That's what I like. I think Minghella is very good at that. Plus, nice locales! I loved Ripley. Ridley Scott doesn't really float my boat. I put that one in because I think Rufus once mentioned how he loved Scorsese (when he went to the Gangs of NY premiere? I can't remember).

I know this is going to sound odd, but I think of Anthony Minghella as a sort of girly director--girly in the sense that I have this vision of a bunch of 12 year olds standing around in the bathroom trying on nailpolish and talking about boys and Austin novels when I watch one of his films. His stuff is always so frothy and frilly and messy. I quite liked The English Patient probably more owing to the locale and Juliette Binoche than anything else but I haven't been able to stand any of his other films. They careen along like potential train wrecks and then fizzle out leaving me with not much of any impression of anything. I can't remember a thing about TTMR except that it was pretty. Ridley Scott has a gorgeous intensity and gives his actors a great deal of creative freedom. His work is also very emotional, it's often just on a bit grander scale. Black Hawk Down for instance. But for smaller fare there is always Thema and Louise. He also has amazing instincts about actors and what they are capable of. I think it would be interesting to see his intensity as a film maker paired with Rufus' intensity as an actor. For the really emotional character stuff I chose Alejandro González Iñárritu. He's a much better director than Anthony Minghella in my opinion.

And what about The Coen Brothers? And I would vote for Sam Mendes too.

Why him particularly? He's directed only one film so far.
