I don't know that this comes under the heading of Rufus "stuff" but The Plastic People of the Universe, a band that figures very prominently in Rock 'n' Roll will be playing at Joe's Pub on 27 September. you can find out more here: www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=21624

I LOVED them!! There were great! Much better too than that crackly tape they play during RnR. All the lyrics were in Czech but still, rock n roll!

It would be very cool if they recorded the live performance and used it in the show.

actually Jan's fanaticism about his albums is a part of the show. So no, I don't think they would have been because they were new at the time. But that doesn't mean a point isn't being made by using the originals. If I can actually get my head out of Rufus' performance this time, maybe I can think about it. then on the other hand it might just be more fun to watch Rufus and forget about the nuance of the symbolism.

All the more reason that it would be amazingly cool to have a recording of a live performance.

Well, didn't he say that they had instruments held together by spit? Maybe the equipment wasn't fantastic at the time. I do like it to be a bit crackly/scratchy during the show, it gives it an air of authenticity. Jan also said later in the play that he had an album that was made from tapes smuggled out of the country by tourists so the quality on that one couldn't have been great.

I'm going to have to read this again, aren't I? I last read it on the flight home from London... sigh, such a trial, being forced to read Tom Stoppard... ;D
