I'm curious if anyone knows of particular roles/films that Rufus has turned down? Has he ever said? I've read a lot of older interviews with him online, and he often talks about turning-down roles.

that's an interesting question, miss O. I don't know right off hand what he has turned down but I know a couple I think he wishes he had.

That is such a great question, I wish I knew. I wonder if he was ever offered/asked to read for Darcy in Pride & Prejudice '95...

I remember reading somewhere that Ru read for and was considered for the Lestat character in "Interview with the Vampire", until Tom (Snooze) Cruise decided his lordship would play the part (badly as usual).
I think that would have been a great role for Rufus. I don't know of any roles he turned down that subsequently became a defining role for the actor who did play the part - that is a very interesting question. Does anyone who knows Ru personally have any idea?

Actually, thinking back, in one of the RnR interviews of last year, didn't he mention that "The Coast of Utopia" was sent to him but that because of several reasons, it didn't work out? I wonder who they wanted him for, Bakunin?? He would have made an adorable Belinski... or Bakunin for that matter.
Also, after the Shining City debacle, didn't the producers offer him the Billy Flynn part in Chicago which he happily turned down?

There are times when I like Rufus almost as much for the things he turns down as the things he actually ends up doing. I'm trying to visualize Rufus touring the provinces autographing programs "Joaquin Phoenix" for kids who tell him how much they loved him in Gladiator. As to Coast, there was some character whose description was Rufus to the life. I just wish I could remember who without going back to search. (Which I'm not going to do... at least not today)

Does anyone who knows Ru personally have any idea? Roof said in an interview a long time ago that he came over to the States to read for the part of Lestat in Interview With A Vampire. He was with Helen McCrory at the time and they made the trip together. She got a small part (one of the prostitutes I think). He made a comment something on the lines of "yeah - Tom Cruise and I often go for the same parts." I knew about Shining City because he told me at the 24 Hour Plays, but no others. G xo
