wanted to post this before, didn't know where to put it but now we have a music section. Re the thread posted with gorgeous pics by Rufus' childhood friend Robert Swipe. I was very impressed by how emotive his writing was and so followed him up. As well as writing, he is a singer/song writer. Very strange quirky songs ,very strange quirky person, but beautifully written . wonderfully poetic The Album I found was called "Madcap in the Attic" and could be downloaded free( Robert's decision). Three of the songs almost made me cry with their sadness. Not for regular playing but for just sitting and listening to occasionally. Did anybody else follow him up? If you want to find him the url I found first seems to have vanished but you may be able to find him on Feedburner .com Please ignore any oddities of his followers or indeed of Robert himself, it is worth it for his writing and that he still talks about "his mate Caspar" . I would be interested to know what you think

OK, bumping this thread. Sorry if this bothers people.
I'm a trained musician. I have a college degree in music. It probably goes without saying, then, that music more or less rules over my life. I love it-playing, singing, listening, even just discussing. Nothing makes me happier, really.
Anyway, I listen to a lot of different things. I'm a huge fan of classical; I've been that way since I was a kid, when I started taking piano lessons. It wasn't until high school when I started getting into popular music. As far as that goes, I'll listen to whatever sounds good. I'm a self-confessed indie kid more than anything, I suppose, if I had to pick a description of what I listen to most.
Having said that, I really can't stand most country. The only two country acts I have in my music library are Jim Reeves and Alabama, one CD of each. I could stand to have more Jim Reeves; he has such a beautiful voice. <3

Well i remember us riding in my brother's car, Her body tanned and wet down at the reservoir At night on the banks i'd lie awake, And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take Now that memory comes back to haunt me, It haunts me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, Or is it something worse I guess this one is my all-time favourite song ever since I heard it on the radio for the first time when I was about fifteen. I've always had some very vivid images in my head, and guess who's the leading man now Thanks a lot, CrownPrincess, for bringing this thread back up. I have been wondering if we had a music thread somewhere but kept forgetting to look for it. I'm far from a professional musician, but I love singing and playing the alto recorder (but only for myself, I'm WAY to bad for anyone to listen). Mr. Kate is a good organist and pianist, though I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, my collection borders on schizophrenic with a range from Bach to punk rock to Irish folk to French chansons ;D The only styles I don't care much for are rap/hip-hop, the harder varieties of metal, experimental jazz and blues. Among many other things, this forum has also made me discover some lovely new music: the Grand Union album is really beautiful, and I'd never have come across the Kings of Convenience if Frannie hadn't mentioned them. And it's Meg's fault that I fell in love with Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros My long-standing favourites are Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Carla Bruni, Alanis Morissette, the Cranberries, the Beatles, Robbie Williams, Simon & Garfunkel, Enya, Loreena McKennitt, and a few youthful sins like Ace of Base (I can't help still liking that 90s feeling). More recent beloved discoveries include Mumford & Sons ( ), Young Rebel Set, Marina and the Diamonds, Of Monsters and Men, Arcade Fire, the Pogues, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Sophie Zelmani ... and I've realized Johnny Cash is a lot more than "Ring of Fire". Some of his interpretations of famous pop songs really get under my skin.

^ Kings of Convenience, Mumford & Sons, and Arcade Fire. Very nice! I can't say I'm a fan of Alanis Morissette, however. I'm somewhat picky when it comes to voices. It's often a make-or-break thing for me when it comes to music. I've been meaning to check out the Of Monsters & Men album. What's it like?

I've been meaning to check out the Of Monsters & Men album. What's it like? It's nothing spectacular but I like it quite well. Some of the songs remind me of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, a bit of Arcade Fire also comes to mind sometimes. I had to listen two or three times to really get into it, but it's lovely, rather gentle music.

Hm. Sounds like the kind of thing I'd really enjoy. I don't know Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes all that well, but any comparison to Arcade Fire is good enough for me. Are you as excited as I am about "Babel" coming out next month?

-I love folk music, bagpipes, cello music and lots of film soundtracks especially the track to the Sherlock Holmes film.

Stravinsky is good stuff. I have a 2-disc set of some of his best works. Cello music. If only I had the power in me to play cello. Unfortunately, string instruments are a weakness of mine. -sigh-

Are you as excited as I am about "Babel" coming out next month? Oh, YES!! The "Sigh No More" album must be the CD I played most often within a short time. Usually, I get tired easily and don't listen to the same album more than two or three times in a row, but this one has been running almost constantly for a long time, and I still find it very inspiring to listen to. KQ, I'm also quite a lot into folk music, especially the Irish/Scottish/Breton variety The more melancholy, the better. Cello is lovely. I don't have any gift whatsoever for string instruments, I even gave up the guitar rather quickly, but I love listening.

I've got a lot of stuff on the backburner to check out as far as new stuff from this year. I picked up the David Byrne/St. Vincent collab today. I heard it's gonna be great. I don't really know much about David Byrne, but I love St. Vincent, so it can't be all that bad. Anyway, it's gonna get busy the next few weeks, with all this stuff coming out. Sept. 18: "Shields" by Grizzly Bear, "Battle Born" by The Killers Sept. 25: "Album Title Goes Here" by deadmau5, "Food and Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1" by Lupe Fiasco, "Babel" by Mumford & Sons (Less than two weeks now, KMK! ) Oct. 2: "The 2nd Law" by Muse (EEEEEEE! ), "Transit of Venus" by Three Days Grace I can't wait.

I too have been introduced to music through the forum, that I would never have heard Thanks to Kate, I found Loreena Mckennitt.
Then there was Young Rebel Set. Watching Rufus you-tube videos introduced me to Cold play . I would never have listened to any of their stuff I thought they were for the kids.
Best of all, my kids re-introduced me to the Beatles The simplicity of the melodies of some of their songs together with the beauty of the words is quite unbelievable .
Listen to "Here, there and everywhere." 'There , running my hand through her hair ' it melts your spine
CP If you like melancholy, have you heard any traditional Welsh airs played on a Welsh harp I think Siriol Burford is about the best.

^^ Rufus vids introduced you to Coldplay? That's amazing. While I thought their latest album was a disappointment, I'm rather fond of them.
Also, the Welsh bit sounds like something I should look into. I don't think I know any Welsh music at all.
