now if these two people were heterosexual what would you think of this film? My friend thought for a moment then said, pretty boring. I said, so why just because these two men are having a relationship does it suddenly become the best picture of the year? My friend laughed and said, you know, you're right. I never thought of it that way... I disagree, that movie was about the homosexual relationship, if you take that away obviously it would be less interesting. But you can say that about any film. Take "The Queen" and take away Diana's death and it would be a pretty dull week. I don't see how that's fair to judge any film.

Take "The Queen" and take away Diana's death and it would be a pretty dull week. I don't see how that's fair to judge any film. yeah I don't know, Uke. To me those are two entirely different things. A film about a death is a film about a death whether it's about a clowns death or a princesses death or the death of an aid worker in Darfur. Any of those can be touching and poignant depending on how they are handled or completely trivial and superficial. I'm not suggesting you take away the love story, I'm suggesting you imagine it with a heterosexual couple and see if it still stands up. My only point was that it wasn't a very good picture. It used the fact that it was two men to propel it and not it's merits of telling us a story about these people's lives. It was in fact, pretty soapy with break-ups and fights and crying. I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't think Ang Lee is much of a director. His pictures are visual but they always leave me cold emotionally. They have a sort of 'barely skimmed the surface' cartoony feel to them. And don't get me started about Heath Ledger. Two hours of watching an emotionally out of touch man who we are told has this passionate love for his friend but we never see a hint of it? Why? Wouldn't it have been a more interesting choice to see the chinks and cracks in that facade not this guy mumbling and stumbling through the film? Might work in real life, though I confess I'm skeptical that a man like that character would ever come to any acceptance or joy only a justification, but it makes for pretty dull flat drama. At any rate, I think the director was out of his depth and I think Heath Ledger was so out of his depth it hurt to watch him. Jake Gyllenthal wasn't bad but I think most actors in Hollywood could have done as well. Many many people really enjoyed this picture. You know I'm an acting slut. I rarely like a picture like this if I don't think anyone turned in a credible performance. So it doesn't work for me. It could have a been a really beautiful picture in the hands of another director with a different lead. Once again I felt it was Hollywood patting itself on the back for something that's been done better so many times on a smaller scale by other directors and other actors. I don't care for a Man of No Importance but it handled this subject so much more eloquently and that's just one example that comes to mind.

At any rate, I had a friend who raved about it and I said, now if these two people were heterosexual what would you think of this film? My friend thought for a moment then said, pretty boring. I said, so why just because these two men are having a relationship does it suddenly become the best picture of the year? I couldn't have said it better Maxx. True the homosexual relationship was the engine driving this vehicle but Hollywood also has totally lost the art of subtlety. Apparently we are all so lacking in imagination that we have to have everything spelled out for us. I don't slow down & stare at accidents on the freeway either.

I must add one more, or actually two: Lara Croft I+II It might be that my animosity comes from my distaste for Angelina Jolie, but I just can't see her always-pull-a-face-pout. She's the last one I would wish to see acting alongside with Rufus.

Matrix 3 - can't even remember the proper title; so disappointed.
Though the first was fantastic, second, well it was obviously building up to the third, but to be honest, can't even remeber what happened in the end.

I love movies and committed to any movie to finish when I start watching it. There is only one movie I ever fell asleep on.....
Electric Horseman.
There are a list of bad movies. The worst ones are the ones I couldnt' stop watching even tho it's bad. LOL. Then I have to kick myself for wasting two hours on a piece of crap. I resent that.

What?!?! Am I, my best friend and my ex-roomate the only ones who *love* this movie? Okay, the movie wasn't great, but I'm forced to support Miss Jones in her various incarnations as she IS my British alter-ego. Seriously, not just my opinion. I've been told this several times without prompting. I've been actually told this by more people after they saw the second film than the first. Never sure if that's a compliment or not, but since I love Bridget, I choose to take it as a compliment. ;D

re: Love, Actually--I don't love it, but there are parts of it that I find amusing.
Sin City? If nothing else you have to appreciate it for what it tried to accomplish. I found it fascinating.
We won't get into what I think of Bridget Jones. I think much of it has to do with Renee Zellweger who makes me want to gnaw off my own arm to get away when I'm forced to watch her and the rest has to do with Hugh Grant who inspires a similar reaction in me.

Message in a Bottle - when will I ever learn that Kevin Costner will generally disappoint me. Crush - the premise was good but I dont do unhappy endings (and see above!) Londinium aka Four Play - borrowed the dvd and never ever got to the end despite being enamoured of Mr Darcy at the time. Wild Wild West - despite the highly talented Mr Branagh, I couldnt get through this one at all.
That'll do for starters. I dont go to the movies much and have almost given up getting dvds as well. I much prefer tv series these days - give me a box of Cadfael or a series of Morse or Midsomer Murders and I am as happy as Larry! I like the predictable, real (ish) world with happy endings - life is too short to be stressing about unhappy angst ridden tales.

I've never posted here? Ahh, no matter. I have a horrific movie, and the worst part is that is wasn't overrated, it actually bombed big time. It lost around $21 million, yet I still watched it a while later, even knowing that, and I can't believe it wasn't mentioned here. Three words - Howard the Duck
