Being a great fan of Charles II (of course, I wonder why! ) I discovered yesterday that my granddaughter is a direct descendant of his arch enemy Oliver Cromwell! My DIL isnt a great genealogy buff but when we went to visit them at the weekend, I spoke to her uncle who gave me a heads up about their Australian family which includes what is known as the Squatocracy, a well known author and a famous winery. Doing a bit of further digging along one of the lesser known lines has lead me to a direct line down from Oliver's daughter Frances. As genealogy is one of my passions, I am so excited about this - even if I am somewhat ambivalent about Oliver (who I used to think was OK because we share a birthday!) So, sorry Charles!

Shocking!!! Family history is my passion, too, but the best (worst?) I've come up with, although not in my direct line, is a bigamist. And one of his "marriages" was to his own niece = doubly illegal! Nobody as illustrious as Cromwell.....yet. I have to say, though, that had I been around at the time I'd have been on Ollie's side - apart from the ban on fun, that is. So I'd better say sorry to Charles, too!

Well you don't have to feel too sorry for Chuck. He spawned Diana and that lot through one of his liaisons. Aren't half the remaining bluebloods in the UK his line? I think you should both congratulate yourselves for not being in any way related to him. I'm sure I come from a long line of illiterate criminals so you've both got one up on me.

LOL apart from the somewhat famous commode maker, my lot were all illiterates as well (though the commode maker was probably also illiterate) but not AFAIK, criminal ones!!! Not too many skeletons in my line's closets just boring ag labs and miners. I actually had quite a soft spot for OC as well, because we share a birthday and he came from near where I live - dont think I would have appreciated the austerity of his reign though!
