I know! I'm still dumbfounded (though happy) that the "producer types" have finally picked up on everything we knew all along. Like others on this board have already said (very eloquently by the way), what took them all so long? The praise from the producers was right on target, and I think after this show, people will definitely recognize his name. I don't think we have to worry about Rufus changing (as my father would say to give his ultimate compliment, "he's just a regular guy"); I think it goes without saying though that now those stage-door visits will be harder to come by. I even have people who know my "affection" for Rufus now asking me "Isn't that the British actor you talk about on the cover of TV Guide?" He's not "our little secret" any more. I guess we'll have to learn to share sigh!

No, Terri Mac, hopefully Ru is not our little secret anymore, but we know we knew him when.....I saw the YouTube video and I was glowing like a proud mama hearing the producers praise Ru and reiterate what we've known all along. Okay, maybe not a proud mama..............

I've been reading the previous posts, and the prevelant topic seems to be that perhaps if this show is a success it somehow might spoil him. But you know what, I don't think that will happen. I think he's so grounded as to who he is that this will be just another project for him. In any interview be it print or video, he still seems so gracious. You can't fake that. He has yet to become jaded by any means, I wish him all the success in the world and hope that the powers that be will finally take note of this man's truly amazing gift. He is in a class by himself.

Well said, Peach. There's one thing you can be sure of - none of this will go to Rufus' head. He's a genuinely nice person and you're right, you can't fake that. Rai

Hee, hee... I don't think that long term. I'm just thinking how much the blood suckers in Hollyweird might spoil his next 6 months.

Maxx, don't you think that a tad cynical. I heard him say in an interview that some suit said to him that he wasn't the actor they had in mind for a part that they wanted a Rufus Sewell type, and he laughed it off. He knows the biz and how to play the game but he just doesn't seem the type. could be absolutely wrong and we'll all wake up one day and find that beautiful face plastered all over the National Enquirer or some rag like that. After we've picked ourselves off the floor and grab every copy we could lay our hands on that is. No I don't think L.A. will turn him into a Mr. Hyde. I know several actors and some have let their fame get to their heads, the others remember where they came from and are just fine, they know that their next job could be their last so that keeps them grounded. The sad part is our secret will be out and he'll be People magazine's next sexiest man. But we knew that already. Nothing is sexier than a man with a sense of humour, and I think he has his tounge planted firmly in cheek. Plus, and I don't mean to disparage American actors, but he is British and their views on acting varies greatly to their American counterparts. Dame Judy Dench will continue to act for as long as she pleases, while American actors usually see their careers nosedive after the age of 35 (if that "old") case in point, have you seen Meg Ryan lately? Sad but true.

I'm not expressing myself very well. I'm not thinking of any tabloid stuff or Rufus turning into a mad Hollyweird creation, I'm thinking of the comoditization of him. I'm thinking of the things that happen to actors on successful television shows. I'm thinking of how it would be for an actor who prides themselves on their craft to be trotted out like a prized race horse to be paraded around at every event as if nothing matters but how they look and their vacuous chatter.
An anecdote about William Petersen comes to mind. I was sitting in a fairly popular (with locals at least) and old restaurant in NYC a year or so ago when Mr. Petersen and his wife squeezed past my table and the bar on their way out the door. Several women--tourists--sitting at the bar drinking happened to notice him and they literally jumped up and chased him out and up into the street shrieking and babbling all the way, nearly frightening the poor man out of his wits. When they returned they were so noisy they had to be asked to keep it down.
William Petersen. In NYC.
Just imagine what it will be like for Rufus. In LA.
However, Rufus is a rather social animal with his fans. He might get a kick out of it for a while...

MAxx, I wonder if they filmed this show in NYC the fans would leave him alone. My sister lives in the city, West VIllage to be exact, there are many actors and celebs who live in the area. For the most part they are left alone, I've walked past Baryshnikov, Rupert Evert, just to name two and people barely noticed them, perhaps as a NY'er myself we've all been a bit jaded by the whole thing. Not too long ago, I was visiting my sister, I had taken some days off from work and spent them with her. we were riding the bus downtown and there he was, Ruf that is hailing a cab three blocks from where my sister lives. He was in town during Rock and Roll's run on B'dwy. People walked right passed him w/o batting an eye. He is so grounded and sure of who he is that I don't think he'll change much because he know how fleeting fame can be. He is the most endearing actor to come along in ages. I'm sure everyone here would agree. There is something quite strange about the culture of L.A. , it's sad when your only industry is make believe. I think that's why he'll make LA a temporary home. The culture is different on the east coast and certainly in the UK, I don't think we'll ahve any worries on that front. Poor Mr Petersen, must have scared him quite a bit. Fame is really a double edged sword so many people want it and when they acheive it they regret it somewhat.

I lived in NYC for a number of years so that was why the situation startled me. What you describe exists in LA as well. I live in a area with more than one celeb and some of them are huge names, but no one bothers them. The reason no on bothers them is because it's a fairly isolated area and they are just part of the neighborhood. If one of the tour buses that relentlessly troll places like Beverly Hills were to happen this way it might be a different situation. The long and short of it is that tourists don't realize they're here. They're off looking in Hollywood or Beverly Hills or wherever it is that tourists go when them come to LA.
But there is something about television fame that is unique. The people on television come into your home once a week. They seem accessible. They seem like someone you should know. And people treat them differently. There is less mystique and with it comes less of that fear that we have of unfamiliar situations.
At any rate, it was just an observation. I expect Rufus will be able to handle nearly anything the fans throw at him. It's more the industry people that would concern me.
One of my favorite quotes of Rufus' was this one (and I'm paraphrasing here) "I figure at any given moment I'm just one compliment away from becoming a complete arsehole" Or something to that affect. I hope he has it taped to the mirror in his trailer. It's one of the wisest and most insightful things I've ever heard an actor say. ;D
