Hi. I found this site looking to buy the DVD In a Savage Land. I cannot find it anywhere so I thought I'd join one of Mr. Sewell's fan sites to ask if any of you know where I might purchase it. I will admit that recently, while at the public library I checked out the first thing I ever saw Mr. Sewell in, that being Middlemarch. I watched it with my mother when it first aired on Masterpiece Theater when I was 14 yrs old. We were glued to the TV and I instantly had an enormous crush on him...I decided then and there that one day I would marry him...lol!!! I think I've seen most of his work since, except for In a Savage Land (and Rock'n Roll, sadly, I missed that!). I would love to find it if anyone has any ideas. Thanks for your help! PS: This is a great site..glad I found it (if only it had been around when I was 14)

I mean, come one, competing with Rufus....?! ahhh... worse. we watched tristan and isolde yesterday, and after the movie, i asked him if, had he been tristan, he would have followed isolde at the end, instead of staying for the fight. he started laughing, and said that, had he been tristan, he probably would have turned gay! i did not like this one one bit LOL

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I don't have a computer at home so it was nice to come into work today and see the responses. I'm going to try ebay. There were a couple for sale on amazon ranging in price from $28-$150!!! I also had a chance to look at this site more thoroughly... ! Great job and what a wonderful group of fans Mr. Sewell has. I'm really going to enjoy my new hobby of checking into this site everyday while I'm supposed to be working!!! Thanks again everybody! PS: I'm glad Mr. Sewell has a new show (to which he's WAY overqualified!!) but US network TV, in my opinion, is so lame. Mr. Sewell deserves so much better!

Ebay Australia usually has them available - you will need a region free dvd player though (this is probably going to be the beginning of a substantial addiction and you will be looking for dvds wherever you can get them!!!) Welcome BTW, hope you continue to enjoy the experience!

ok so i saw in a savage land today.
it reminded me of "the year of living dangerously" - one of my favourite movies ever - for the mix of adventure and love stories.
nice movie... so fascinating. i like this donovan guy, saw him often in american tv shows, i believe its the first time i saw him in a movie. GORGEOUS MAN.
maya stange, who is that? i liked her. she was very natural and so nicely depicted the courage and passion of her character.
loved rufus - of course, no one here will be surprised, i guess - i never get over the fact that he can play a "regular" guy with looks like these. of course, mick carpenter is not ordinary in the usual sense of the term, but rufus' acting is so understated, so subtle, that once again i found myself forgetting rufus, and believing in his character, a real "guy".
strong and vulnerable, macho yet able to admire and respect a gal ... did they break the mould, i wonder???
all the love sequences were believable and well played - which is not always the case. another resemblance to "the year of living dangerously". you feel the ackwardness when they start dancing on "begin the beguine", then you see them so very slowly getting in phase...
and the "undressing" scene - might be the very first time that i saw such a scene be filmed so true to real life, nervous fumbling with the clothing included - where again, you see them going from adoring devotion to utter impatience, so sweet, so well done.
all along i wondered, however, how the initial quest of the academic couple was fitting in all that. but dont you LOVE IT when it is not spelled out to you, when a movie production does not make you feel like an infantile idiot, and let you think on your own, and discover the secrets?
of course, the link is through evelyn's stubborness to give a voice to the powerful women of the tribe, through which she finds the courage to lead her own life. the link is also through mick's journey within himself - "god on the island" but nothing outside of it - that leads him from hell to heaven. and even in the utter failure of the husband, the mighty macho whose values and knowledge cannot protect him outside of the world he is used to.
in studying the "savages", they all, ultimately, meet their true natures, their true fates, and get much more than what they were expecting from this "savage land".
does it show that i liked the movie?

Tipou, great review! So glad you liked it. I must admit it is one of my favourites having lived in PNG for a few years - mind you, there werent any Mick Carpenter traders in my neck of the woods!
The only thing that grated with me was John Howard's attempt at a Scots accent although I do generally have a great deal of respect for JH's acting (the pastor)

Some people have complained about the pacing of the film and the horrid lighting, I think it fit perfectly. It's a quiet sort of film and I think you're synopsis hit the nail on the head. Too many times we are bombarded with "message" films and not so subtle way either.
I think one of my favorite scenes in the film is when Mick escorts her to the village and it's raining out and he's sitting under the tree with very large leaf over his head. Then she asks him in. Beautifully filmed and entirely realistic. GLad you liked it.
