What a beautiful, sad movie. Not that a movie ending with a suicide is necessarily sad on balance; I recall finding the 'Hours' oddly life-affirming even though it ended similarly. But this, I just felt sad about everything, in spite of the fact that they shared a long and lasting love. Perhaps I am just too conventional in my thinking to appreciate that configuration of 'family' surrounding Strachey in the end.
I thought Rufus was excellent as the frustrated lover/artist. I was surprised that he was so insensitive when they finally had sex -- he must have been nearly as clueless as she was.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if Rufus were to get a meaty role such as Carrington or Strachey, in such an excellent film! That would be something to see! I thought Thompson and Pryce were wonderful.

For anyone who has only seen this movie via youtube (that would be me), a new version has been uploaded in the last few days. The new version has new Rufus scenes at the beginning that were not included in the version somebody put up last year. The beginning of the movie makes a whole lot more sense now I don't want to put up a direct link, but if you search Rufus's name, and then sort results by "date added" it will come up. I agree with lizap that this was a very beautiful movie. Sort of like watching a painting, which I guess was the point. And the acting was fabulous all the way around.

this is a beautiful film , beautifully acted Roofie stunningly beautiful, jaw- droppingly so in his cozzie. An amazing performance as you would expect from him. the tormented frustration and the heartache on Carrington's final rejection BUT while I can understand a woman falling in love with a homosexual , what I could NOT understand was one falling in love with a man who was so grossly insensitve, selfish and unkind not to mention repulsive .( no personal reflection on Jonathan Pryce ,a great actor, brilliant performance)
******SPOILER
Carrington was an obsessive who also became selfish and insensitive to the other people in her life using them without thought.. I found her suicide was the act of a spoilt selfish neurotic woman with whom I had no sympathy.
An excellent and thoughtful film

Saw this movie for the first time and needless to say it was depressing. Not a happly film, great performances though as usual by Thompson (but when isn't she good?) and Pryce. Ruf is a very angry, frustrated man but definitely a film I would reccomend.

Re-watched this movie for the movie of the week. Still don't really understand these people. Every one of them seem to be very damaged. Some of them more than others. Carrington seems so afraid of sex she gravitates toward someone who will never want it from her. She really seems to be a sexually confused person, today she would probably have gender re-assignment surgery. Rufus just wants sex, but doesn't seem to know what he's doing when he gets it. Strachey just seems to want someone to take care of him, he thinks he is entitled to be waited on. "Legend in his own mind" syndrome.

I don't like this film very much - exactly for the reason reformeddruid mentioned:
But I think Rufus made a brilliant performance, especially in the scene on the landing: looking so miserable that on the spot you'd like to take him into your arms and try to comfort him.....

I found this movie fascinating. I enjoyed discovering all of the characters and the snapshot of their lives left me curious to find out more about the individuals.
With Mark Gerler it really was all about him. His building frustration that Carrington refused to have sex with him. When he finally got his way - it was just that "his way" and his technique came as no great surprise.
I read a description of Mark Gertler as a passionate man with green eyes. I thought that was a great summing up of the way Rufus played him too.
All of the characters I thought were interesting, you just had to take them for what they were and not try to normalise them. All in all they all did a great job IMHO.

I have liked this movie, here what I saw Rufus for the first time and immediately I was lost. But it is already many years ago. Absolutely Nell!!! I agree with what do you write. There is a special atmosphere, I do not know how to describe it. Nell wrote it as I did it myself.

I watched about three quarters today while ironing, which was not a good idea because I missed too many nuances about the relationships between all those involved. Fine acting by Jonathan Pryce and Emma Thompson in any case, even if everybody seems more or less disturbed. Mark's frustration becomes tangible in the first minute he appears on screen. When he finally takes what he wants, it's rather brutal and no way really to treat a woman you love, but then, he's the classical angry young man and by then quite out of his mind with frustration that Carrington just doesn't seem to realize that he's also got a body. The scene on the stairs was at a time shocking and very understandable and I felt the urge to lead that young man away from the crowd and calm him down a little. That's the thing I love so much about Rufus's acting - even if his character acts oddly or violently, he still makes you understand the reasons behind it somehow. (A bit like Frank in "Martha ..." who is in fact an awful nuisance and behaves rather badly, but anyway you want to bring him on the right track again because it feels like there's a nice person hidden somewhere under the rough shell.) (And who else could have made this ridiculous swimsuit look almost sexy? )

Love how she says ALMOST sexy. This was an okay film, I haven't watched it in ages, I'll have to have another look.

Finally got to see this because it just happened to come on an old movie channel we get on local tv! Stroke of luck that my mom happened to turn to it right when it was starting! An interesting movie, I suppose, but rather depressing. Rufus did a superb job portraying an angry young man. I must confess the best thing about watching this (besides Rufus, of course) was my mom's comments about his swimsuit. I won't repeat them here.

Oh no! I missed it! Was it on a channel that might be available all the way down here, Anna? I completely missed it. I have yet to see Rufus on my TV spontaneously I've seen this film though (thru youtube) and I hate that I didn't like it. Mostly because 1. I love Emma Thompson; 2. I love Jonathon Pryce (especially after seeing him in Pirates of the Caribbean and De-Lovely) and 3. I love Rufus. Something in the film, to me, was lacking. Maybe it was because it focused pretty much only on Carrington's relationships and not as much on her art as well as her relationships and other aspects of her life as I expected it would. It was also quite slow in saying what it needed to say (whatever that was). I'll have to admit though, there was something beautiful in the story. A girl falling in love with a man she can never have, he knows of her love for him and yet they still remain friends. It was quite depressing, though Maybe it was Carrington's hair, or the lighting of the film, or the fact that I didn't find Carrington's other guys (who were not Rufus) at all attractive.

It was on something called This.TV, which we just happened to pick up on the antennae some time after X-mas. It plays lots of old movies and the like. And a few months ago, Tristan + Isolde came on the CW (for the upstate area). That's all I've been able to get for spontaneous Rufus. lol

I completely agree. That was definitely my favourite scene. When his voice breaks with such annoyed sorrow when he tells Carrington that Lytton is a "disgusting pervert" got to me. He shows such vulnerability and how much he cares for her in barely 2 seconds. It's a fantastic moment!

anna: Oh! OK...I wonder if that's something like MyTV down here? We get it on WSAV-3 (or, our NBC channel) and sometimes we get it on FOX-28 (or, our local Fox channel). It's weird that I didn't hear anything about it being on OH NO! I just clicked the link you provided and we DO get that channel! It's on WTOC (our CBS station)....ugh! Dammit!
