especially wehn the vcr recorder is there to take over if you doze off. i am very bad. i can doze off even watching rufus. hey, not his fault. i once dozed off in my car, wiht the motor running, waiting for the train to pass. honking cars woke me up.

no... i've always been that way. i wanna sleep - i sleep. i close my eyes, i'm gone. that time with the train, yeah, i was tired. but most of all, i had the sun in my eyes, directly over the train. so i closed my eyes while the train passed... woof. sleep. whenever i have insomnia, it's like hell, i really dont get it that i cant sleep.

I've done a couple of all nighters, it was fun but then I paid for it the next morning. It's odd I can be a morning and night person, depends on the kind of day I've had. BUt when I'm tired I can sleep till the cows come home. Did it frighten you that you dozed while in your car?

maybe it should have, but it did not. i am so used to it. at least, i had put the transmission at park!!! i developped safety habits like that. i usually am aware when such an episode will happen. when i am very tired is obvious, but when i feel really cool and relaxed, not so much, but i have learned to read the signs. like tonite, i went for dinner with friends, on friday nights i am relaxed AND tired, so i dont drive. i ask a friend for a lift. well.. good call. when the waitress turned to me to take my order, i was asleep, sitting up. laughter woke me up. one look at the waitress, and i said "i'll start with a coffee..." she smiled and said "i was going to suggest it".
the problemis that my dayly commute is about 40 minutes, no traffic. so on some mornings i have to make sure that i have plenty of cd's and that i open my windows once in a while.

Do you think you might have sleep apnia? It's more common than you think, your symptoms sound like that malady. You are quite fortunate that you haven't been involved in something serious.

my doctor does not seem alarmed. it seems to happen when i am at home, or in "safe places". more often than not, it's voluntary. i want to sleep, i sleep. in a matter of 4-5 seconds. friends are really amazed when i do that.
the thing, i think, is to be aware of the problem. i know i am this way, so i take precautions. very rarely any alcool, and then again, in small doses. recreational drugs have been totally out for a while as well, for evident reasons.
i would never drive while i think there is a risk. a couple of times i even called in sick because driving was out of the question. of course, i had to lie. i cannot really tell the receptionist, that i stay home because i feel sleepy. but i know that, for me, it would be as irresponsible and criminal as drunk driving if i did drive when i feel i could fall asleep.
i really never felt sleepy while driving anymore than the next person, but of course i take precautions for that too, just in case, since in fact driving tends to relax me. so i stop for coffee, i plan many stops for errands when i feel tired. i will avoid heavy meals beore driving, make sure i have enough sleep, things like that. my boss understands that when i take breaks, it means that i nap for 10 minutes in the conference room, which probably ensures a safe trip back home. i never speed, and i keep my distances. i may be the most prudent driver ever.
there are worst cases. i just heard last week that hugh laurie is known to fall asleep while actually standing up, and once fell asleep while driving his motorcycle.
i have been driving for 25 years, never had an accident ever, except for one fender bender with someone that was following me too closely in traffic, and a collision with a snow bank because of a treacherous ice patch.

Thank the Lord for small favors. My dad is like that he can sleep anywhere anytime. You seem to be coping well though. Bless you.

I can't believe you're not in a constant state of high alertness with all your Rufus viewing! He is definitely a stimulant.

Bumping up to top of thread for discussion after the episode! I hope (1) it lives up to last week's standards, and (2) it doesn't suffer in the ratings from the people who will be tuning into ER for their special gueststars.

****GE2 dont read, spoilers********************** ok just a quick pause during the commercial, i want it on record notice how, whenever a character in a show /movie wears big, ugly, conspicuous glasses - in this case marley's sister - someone is bound to take them off to reveal the (very conspicuously) hidden beauty... and then they fall in love or something. also i have to write it down "no one leaves their door open in new york" stupid line - as if, in all other cities, hotel doors are left open all the time. oh my god these writers.

**** SPOILERS - BUT THEN AGAIN... NOT MUCH TO SPOIL *****
10:30. i am certainly not the only one having guessed that the chemist with the 3 days beard certainly is guilty.
and i certainly am not the only one in this group who laughed out loud when dr.rufus mentioned pheromones. in fact, i think i might have waken up my upstairs neighbour.
stephen fry understood long ago how pheromones could be dangerous. he should meet with jacob hood... oh, wait. he did. silly me.
