I'm not sure if everyone has heard about this yet but actress Natasha Richardson, wife of Liam Neeson, passed way earlier today at a NYC hospital. She fell Monday while taking a skiing lesson at a resort in Canada and struck her head. While she seemed fine immediately after the accident, she was rushed to the hospital an hour later after developing a severe headache. She was then flown to the hospital in New York. There hasn't been much information released but the speculation is the blow to the head caused bleeding in the brain, causing extensive damage and she was declared brain dead Tuesday. She was kept on life support, possibly to allow her family time to get to the hospital to say goodbye.
My heart goes out to her family, especially her two young sons. If some good comes out of this it'll be that people will realize how important it is to wear a helmet when participating in any sport where a head injury is a danger.

I think the only things I saw her in was "Maid in Manhatten" and an episode of Top Chef, but while I thought she was an annoying character in Maid...for some reason I can't simply say "oh well..." I mean when older actors die, or even young ones die of something stupid like with Heath Ledger, I simply shrug and say "saw it coming". Not so with Natasha. Granted she should have worn head gear...but skiing is not really something people think to wear helmuts. Sadly...they still won't. Just like motorcycles. I stopped watching American Chopper when it became apparant that the Tuetles didn't care about the image they put forth when they would ride their choppers helmutless.
R.I.P Natasha...

I read a story on cnn.com today that I hope Natasha's family and friends see. A couple were watching tv and saw the news report about Richardson's death. They immediately thought of their 7-year-old daughter who had been hit in the head by a baseball a couple of days before. They put an ice pack on the bump that formed and the swelling decreased and she seemed fine, even getting an A+ on her spelling test. The mom decided to go check on her daughter, who was sleeping, and when she woke her, the little girl said her head hurt. Her mom immediately called the pediatrician who told them to get the child to the hospital. By the time the mom got off the phone, the girl was sobbing she was in so much pain. At the hospital, a CAT scan showed she had the same injury, an epidural hemotoma, that killed Natasha! The child was flown to the nearby Children's Hospital where neurosurgeons operated on her and saved her life. The surgeon told the parents if they hadn't woken their daughter up to check on her, she wouldn't have woken up at all. The little girl is now home and expected to make a full recovery.
