As per Rai's suggestion, I've created this thread - please put all discussion of the plot of The Pillars of the Earth here, but any news of the filming on the ...err....News thread. (But don't think I won't be popping in every so often to keep any eye on you! )

So I guess this rules out any detailed discussion of the Forest Scene (which may or may not end up in the final product).

On this thread you can, Judy - that's why it's the spoiler thread! Just not on any other threads, puh-lease!

If you knew what the Forest Scene entailed, you wouldn't be so quick to allow us a detailed discussion! Let's just say that "chatting" is involved. And, yes, I'll definitely keep spoilers out of the other thread!

I just finished reading the book and went to read the synopsis in the TPOTE website, and they've really changed too many things. I see that Tom does not deliver the baby and there's no mention of Jonathan. Also, in the book they both had an instant attraction and had the sex scene in the forest but in the movie there's no mention of either. I HOPE they have some sex between them in the movie so I can drool a little.

I think not delivering the baby is fine and when I read about sex scene immediatley after her death I felt a little numb so perhaps that is okay too. I think there is no intention of making them sexless just a little restrained.

Phyllis, I noticed the absence of Jonathan in the synopsis, too. (And that whole part of the book where Ellen, Tom & his kids first meet Father Phillip and see the baby.)
But, I did see on the cast listings that they have cast the younger Jonathan and apparently will be casting an older version.
I guess that synopsis is still a work in progress.

judypatooty, your little tidbits about that "forest scene" has REALLY stirred my um "curiosity". Pretty darn good stuff, eh? Can you drop a few more hints? This is, afterall, the spoiler thread - and who's to say at this point if that scene in the book will be in the series. So SPILL THE GOODS, girl!

Read the book! Seriously! It's long, but a very, very good story. Okay, I'll see if I can summarize the forest scene from memory. Anyone else who can correct my mistakes, please do! Tom's wife, Agnes, died in childbirth and he became very dazed emotionally (oh, and he was physically starving at the time, by the way). Ellen, whom he and Agnes had met earlier in the story (and whom Tom had noticed his attraction to) comes upon him in the forest at night. He's so dazed and grieving that he pretty much thinks Ellen might be an angel come to comfort him. She comforts him alright (LOL!) by basically jumping his bones. Hot sex ensues. The end. So, as you can tell, this is quite a bit different from the website's synopsis in which Tom and Ellen more gradually notice a mutual attraction.

Judy, I think you've summarized it very well, no corrections due.
I, like vmaciv above, was also a little shocked by Ellen's actions since Agnes had just died the night before. But she was young and Tom was the only guy she was interested in in 11 years since Jack died. So, I suppose she was desperate for some, um, "bones". Hope they do put in some love scenes, Tom and Ellen had a full sex life in the book.

I think you're right about Ellen's actions. She had lived most of her life on the outskirts of society and obviously didn't care much for society's rules. So, given the opportunity of "hooking up" with a man she was attracted to probably didn't present any great moral qualms for her! I'm hoping for lots of good Tom & Ellen love scenes, too. Heck, they went at it like bunnies in the book!

According to the book, the sex in the forest scene unfolded as described by Judy above. It was a little bit odd, but given that Tom was dazed and confused and starving and grieving (and men will obviously have sex anywhere, anytime - well at least Ken Follet thinks they will!!!), you could kind of understand - plus he just lay there whilst Ellen took control and thought this (one of my favourite lines) - "In the back of his mind he conceived the idea that he was dead", LOL!!! But overall it was hot, hot, hot. She had her eye on him for some time, and well, you go girl!!!! But, without the benefit of the book, which always does a much better job of describing the feelings behind the actions, that scene may have been just too over the top for the tv masses. Plus in the true tv convention, there needs to be a level of Unresolved Sexual Tension which will be fulfilled by Tom & Ellen slowly falling in love and (hopefully) RESOLVING it. But i'm not happy about it and i swear, if we wait & wait & wait & finally get kissing & touching & a bare chest by lamplight - followed by a cut to the "morning after armpit", i will SCREAM!!! BUT, i don't understand the logic in Tom going for help and leaving 2 children behind to deliver a baby? Why wouldn't you send the strapping 14 year old??? Why would anyone go - it's not like you could pop down the road to the local clinic and get a nurse to come??? It's the 11th century & babies were delivered by sisters, friends, aunties and yes, even husbands. That was the start of Tom's big scene in the book, a heartwrenching and confusing chain of events that led to the sex in the forest scene, and i'm just not very happy that it's been cut Those scriptwriters are going to have to come up with something really good to impress us!!!! (I think maybe we shouldn't have read the book & then we wouldn't be disappointed )
