I can't make an objective description now... my brain was off That sounds about right, especially for episode 2! ;D This is not a link to episode 3, but to a page for the trailer. There are a few photos of Rufus in the slide show, and two of them I don't think I've seen before. www.starz.com/originals/ThePillarsOfTheEarth/ThePillarsOfTheEarth_103

I might just about to say something that'll get me expelled from this board, but I will say it anyway... It hurts to say but I find POTE a bit dissapointing as far as Rufus is concerned.
Am I the only one who doesn't get Tom? He just doesn't do it for me. At all! At least not yet. Yes, Rufus is acting well enough, but it's as if he's struggling with the role, like he doesn't quite know how to play him. He's here, he's there, he's all over the place. Maybe it's coz they film it this way, and maybe, just mybe his character wasn't written well? I don't know. I haven't read a book. So this is my first meet with POTE. And the problem is I like it a lot, but the synchronisity (if that's even the word) is missing for me. The break down of episode is done so badly, that every character suffers form it - every character is not getting a chance for emotional full scene, they seem to cut abruptly when they could have stayed few seconds longer, or rush things incredibly where they should have waited. Like that sex scene. I mean come on! How much sexier would that have been had they let them gaze at each other for an episode or 2, explore a little, instead we got what we got. And also I don't feel any chemistry between Tom and Ellen. I'm sorry I don't. I think there were more sparks between him and his late wife than between these two. That famous picture of them in the cave - that was it - so much in just a touch, and eyes. That at least what had to happen before them hitting the sheets a la medieval style. I don't know, will keep watching though, and hope that Rufus will work his magic on me again as so many times before...
I suspect I might be the only one "doom&gloom" so I'll shut up and not spoil you the experience any further ... at least until my opinion is changed.

I might just about to say something that'll get me expelled from this board, but I will say it anyway... It hurts to say but I find POTE a bit dissapointing as far as Rufus is concerned. Don't worry, we always have diverging opinions here! That's half the fun. There are a few of us who have prolonged debates about various Rufus characters mostly just because we like to hear ourselves talk. ;D SPOILERSAm I the only one who doesn't get Tom? He just doesn't do it for me. At all! At least not yet. Yes, Rufus is acting well enough, but it's as if he's struggling with the role, like he doesn't quite know how to play him. He's here, he's there, he's all over the place. Now this surprises me! Because your screen caps are the screen caps of a woman in luuuuuuuv. ;D The break down of episode is done so badly, that every character suffers form it - every character is not getting a chance for emotional full scene, they seem to cut abruptly when they could have stayed few seconds longer, or rush things incredibly where they should have waited. I agree with you on this. In the old, lost thread, a few of us mentioned how we disliked the quick cuts, especially the cross-cutting in big emotional scenes, like the childbirth scene. Rather than build up the drama, I thought it undermined it. On the other hand, others liked that choice. But they are hampered by the need to get through so much material in so short a time, so I understand why they're rushing through a lot of the story. I would have loved to see this as a full season series (but am very greatful for what we're getting, of course). I don't know, will keep watching though, and hope that Rufus will work his magic on me again as so many times before... I hope so to, just so you can enjoy the series more.

The movie is rushing thru details that the book takes the time to explain. I have to admit that I had to watch the first 2 episodes a couple of times just to get the details right. I also had to post a question on the board because I just couldn't understand what was going on (Thanks again to Rueful and Reformeddruid for patiently explaining them to me). I now watch it just for the Rufus bits.
Now, what to do with my family? I may have to disown them. <just kidding of course ;D> I watched it with 2 of my sons and they both asked me who the guy with the creepy eyes was. And they weren't talking about McShane.

I saw one blog where they praised Ian McShane for portraying Tom Builder just as they imagined him!!

LOL! McShane IS portraying Bigod just as I imagined him. Wasn't Alfred portrayed in the book as a bully? I seem to remember him being mean to Martha and just an overall bully. I don't see Alfred as a bully so far in the movie. In fact, he seems more like a son wanting his father's acceptance and being a good big brother to Martha.
If I remember correctly from the book, Alfred's bully-ing gets him into a heap of trouble later. So maybe his character will change.

Uf, hmmm. ;D I must say that I am not surprised that you have such feelings after watching the first Olika parts. The book is very extensive and the story lines are too many there and the series is too short. I didn´t read the book, but I know the story from my friends. Meanwhile, I liked both parts, just cut in some scenes (childbirth) are interesting and have a foudation in the storyline (in my vision ). To Tom, I think that Rufus knows well what is playing, no exaggerated gestures (again, perhaps blinded by my opinion). The truth is that I'm doing just edited scenes with Tom ;D. Ellen, so that I agree with you Olika, the chemistry between those two figures also do not see much there (in the story of Numb that was better composed ). Ellen still seems like a woman with balls. Agnes was delicate person but very strong within her. We'll see how it goes on.

My first thought about episode three is this: Tom + Ellen + Cave = I need to write another story because that was way, way, way too........ unsatisfying!!! Other thoughts (in no particular order) . William Hamleigh is getting more and more creepy . I'm enjoying the development of the Jack & Aliena story. Eddie Redmayne is doing a very nice job. . Matthew MacFadyen continues to impress me as Prior Philip. The scene with the monks in the quarry was excellent. . Regan Hamleigh is truly, truly awful!!!! (in a good way) . I'm looking forward to seeing the cathedral being built. It's like another character in the series Above all though: Whoever decided to dress Tom in green with his sleeves rolled up and those leather straps round his forearms needs a freaking medal. He is truly the sexiest builder in the history of the world!!!
