one gets to wonder why a cinematographer, producer, director or whatever would pick up a novel to adapt it to the screen, only to change the story line.
can't they write their own story? or, if they can't write, have someone do that for them?
like "put a lot of severed arteries, rapes, treason, complicated oedipal complexes, murders, pregnant nuns, corrupted politicians and clergymen, witches, abandoned babies, torture, you know, kind of what ken follett did, but, you know, bloodier... we will think of a way to link all that together. AND DON'T FORGET NAKED MASONS! WE NEED NAKED MASONS !!! well, just one will do, if the budget is that small...."

[/i]..."[/quote] Which is why 99.9% of the books that are made into movies/TV shows are so much better! I don't know if it has to to with the way movies are made or the need to condense the material, but it is always a mystery to me what gets left out, what gets put in. I haven't read the book yet, decided to hold off until the mini-series was over, but I think I may have to read it sooner. It sounds as if there are MAJOR changes between the two. As for the last episode and Tom's "God's plan" line. I thought that was out of character. Yes, he's a devout man, yes, he has a deep faith in God. But he's telling the woman he loves that her son (whom he also loved as a son) is dead. Add that in to all the other problems I would think that even Tom would be questioning his faith. Plus, Tom knows that Ellen does NOT share his faith in God, it would cause her additonal pain to hear something like that. I can't see him saying that.

If they were following the book he would have been gone already. My son just finished the book and made that observation too. If you read the thread GE2 started about the episodes, it appears something will happen to him in epi 5 or 6. I forgot to ask my son but was Jack's miraculous resurrection in the book? wichi, in the book he is still around at this point. It's not til the attack on the fleece fair that it all goes to sh**, and from the look of the preview and the episode guide, that will be in ep 5. Jack doesn't have a miraculous resurrection in the book because he never goes to Lincoln Castle in the first place. Richard and Philip go on their own. The scene with the swapping of the robes with Stephen happens and both of their eventual captures and being held in the cage, but Philip is never tortured. And Ellen doesn't stay in the cave for 4 years. She and Jack stay completely in hiding (from everyone including Tom), for one year but she comes back on the day of Stephen's visit to the cathedral at which point Tom proposes to her and she agrees to stay. They then marry, Philip forgives her for peeing on the bishop and she stays with Tom for several years until the fleece fair incident. Now why they had to change that perfectly good storyline i have no idea. Just to make poor Tom's life more miserable than it already is i suspect. Yee ha!!! I got to use the spoiler button. How exciting!! And yes, i agree about the book adaptation thing. About the only show that i think is better than the books is True Blood. They basically cover one book per 12 episode series and cram in many more characters and events that actually happen in each (fairly slim) book. But yes, they appear to be deviating away from the book more and more with each episode of TPOTE. And for no apparent reason as far as i can see. What a shame they couldn't cut out the whole fleece fair incident that is coming up in ep 5!!! Joyce, if you feel like it, you're more than welcome to start a new thread under "Members" to introduce yourself to everyone. Rueful, kygal and I already know Joyce from PlanetHood and i know she'll fit right in here!!! ;D

I don't remember Reagan killing her husband in the book either. I also remember Richard as being more of a whimpy little wanna -be in the book than he is in this story. He was always demanding more money, horses, and new equipment from Aliena, in a very childish way. All in all, at least 90% of this episode was made up for no reason at all.

I am not sure RS would be entirely a "free mason" but who says money is everything. I would always pay for something worth while.

Very emotional episode from start to finish. Rufus was excellant! Lots more Tom in this one. Darn that Ken Follett for writing Tom out. Well I guess that is a huge part of the story. Very hard to watch the end. I have dreaded this episode and am glad its over. I will miss Tom. Had trouble sleeping after this one!Was again a little disappointed ( as with Tom on Jacks "death")at Ellens reaction at the end. Thought she may run to him or drop to her knees. May be more in epi 6...but not sure I can take that! Rufus was outstanding throughout this episode. Curious to know how it matched the book for those who have read it?

I agree with you, kygal. I'm glad it's over. It was a very emotional episode from beginning to end. Tom's speech to Alfred and Jack about how he wasn't going to live to see the cathedral built and handing down his tools to one of them got me crying because I just knew what was coming.
