Episode 6 was good. I thought it moved the story along well. What I can't figure out is Alfred. I mean, yes, I get the hating of Jack. I get the jealousy over Alianna, I get his dislike of Ellen. That is all very normal. But how in the world did any son of Tom Builder get to be SUCH a hateful jerk? I mean, Martha seems pretty nice and normal. Is he that way in the book also?
And I'm sure, like everyone else, I loved the scenes with Philip and Jonathon.
Loved the scene with the cathedral in France - it was awe-ful!
Looking forward to the end, how they wrap-up things. Still hoping that all of the baddies get nasty, nasty endings.
Now I know that the book didn't focus as much on the Stephen/Maud storyline, but did they go into the resolution of that situation at all in the book? And I wonder if they will in the mini-series?
Not sure if this would be considered a spoiler or not, but it's so frustrating to think that all of the pain and misery generated by that war was absolutely futile. Because while Stephen held onto the throne, he was succeeded by Maud's son Henry!

Yes Alfred was a bully in the book. Tom never corrected him on his behavior, didn't pay any attention to it at all. He was very hateful to Martha and even worse to Jack in the book. He didn't get to take Alianna's house in the book, because it burned down.
They only treat the situation with the warring nobel's as a matter of fact, this is what happened. They focus much more on the suffering it all causes to the population that can do nothing but try to endure until it's finished.

SPOILERS
It struck me that they must have wanted to give Toms part of the story the biggest share of series. Things seem speeded up again to me a bit like in episode 1. I thought the roof went on pretty quickly. Hell I wish my builders had worked that quickly. Still in hindsight mine did a better job than Alfred !
At the start of the series I thought I was going to like Alfred. He struck me as a bit simple but not unlikeable. What has happened to him now though ? He's turned into a bitter and twisted, egocentric prat. How could he stand there looking so pleased with himself after pinching his Dad's tools and job. He might have well as stuck the sword in Tom himself. Only of course he'd be far too gutless to do anything like that. I am having dificulty believing that he's actually Toms son so different is his nature. Then look at Jonathan and his gentle nature. Perhaps Alfred was the milkman's !
In order to tie this up in 2 hours I imagine it will continue at a break neck speed now until the end.

I thought that the 2 hour finale was made up of episodes 7 & 8. In the same way that the 2 hour premiere consisted of both episodes 1 & 2.
But i could be wrong as i so often am!! ;D
The problem with Alfred (who is exactly as portrayed in the book) is that he's just too good looking to behave like that!!! Although obviously not as gorgeous as his dad, he does have a look of Rufus about him and i think he was well cast as his son.
But as in the book, i never understood why he would be such an idiot. He's much more like Hamleigh than Tom.
And speaking of Hamleigh, it may be that William does finally get what is coming to him (as per the book). I had tweeted David Oakes to tell him that even though he had already apologised, he had ruined my weekend by killing Rufus and that Hamleigh was a complete b*****d, and he replied saying "so sorry about your weekend, your next one may well be less ruined should your hatred of William continue! "
So we'll all be cheering when that happens!!!

Numbat...how funny. Had to call my mom and tell her what you did as we are watching Pillars together. He ruined alot of weekends! Did he apologize earlier about killing Tom off? I think I missed that. I do think William will get whats comming to him. Yes the last 2 hours are 7 and 8...will be done.

Yeah, the Starz website is very clear that TPOTE is an 8 hour event. So if we're getting two hours on Friday, yes it will be episodes 7 & 8 shown back-to-back.
Makes sense that they would do it this way. Most of the networks, even the cable ones, like to have their summer series wrapped up by the end of August and then debut new stuff in September.
Happy to hear that that nasty William had the grace to apologize! But it would have been better if he hadn't made us all so sad to begin with. Like I said, he had better have a particularly horrible end or I will be disappointed.

Did he apologize earlier about killing Tom off? I think I missed that. Sorry Rufus...! 11:31 AM Aug 14th via Echofon twitter.com/David_OakesI enjoy reading his Tweets - seems a nice bloke. I lent my copy of TPOTE to a friend at work last week. Yesterday she stopped by my office and said accusingly "You didn't tell me it was addictive!" She asked if she could lend it to her sister after she's finished reading it. That should bump up the viewing figures when Channel 4 shows it! (I have warned her about the changes, but she's still determined to read it fast so her sister will be able to finish it before the series starts)

I did not read the book but knew enough about it. I think I will read it at some point. Really only watched this because RS was in it. Overall I did enjoy this mini. The sets, costumes, and cast were excellant. All the actors were cast perfectly! Rufus was especially wonderful as Tom. Did not enjoy it as much when he made his exit though.
SPOILERS...
The final episodes moved quickly. Glad the bad ones got what they deserved. Hate to be ugly here but thought William should have suffered more. I was hoping Ellen would have a flash back to Tom in epi 6 or 7/8....but then maybe that would be to sad! Seems to be some differences from the book in the final. Anxious to hear from those who read it on the ending.

I hven't seen the finale yet, so can't comment on what happened, but i just wanted to post a link to this youtube vid entitled "A Friend is Gone - A Tribute to Tom Builder": www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNWWJfYlFxgIt made me cry, but i'm fresh from posting my final Tom fic so i'm a little bit delicate at the moment (i probably shouldn't have watched it in the first place!!). You might not want to watch it but it's fairly short so the pain doesn't last for too long. Sob........

Numbat,
I think you'll like the finale. Don't want to say to much, as I don't want to spoil for anyone, will post more Monday. But yeah, the ending was satisfactory.

I have been watching on Netflicks, they only have half of the finale on there. Don't know what's up with these people. Yesterday they seemed to be aware that there were 8 episodes before they had it available. Then today they seem to have lost the ability to count. Hoping the other half will show up soon. I'm sure they are getting calls about it today.

Will someone please confirm after you see the finale... Was that a sketch of Tom above the door to the cathedral at the very end. It happened so quick eventhough I watched it over and over again. Just wanted to make sure it wasnt wishful thinking or my eyes playing tricks on me.
