You were right about the quote from LeStrade, sunshineprincess. I rewatched the episode (I enjoyed it a lot too, but I'm not quite up to 8 times yet ), and I somehow missed it first time through. I missed a couple of good lines, actually. Must have been family interruptions, which always seems to happen, even though I only watch a couple of tv shows regularly now. Apparently I'm only indispensable to my family during those times. About the killer/Moriarty link, I think the PBS cut was not that he was Sherlock's fan, but that Moriarty funded the cabbie's killing spree by paying him for each person killed.

I had to re-watch the back of the cab scene (where Sherlock tells Watson about "Harry" going from the clues on the mobile, cause when it was first on my husband thought that moment was the perfect one to ask me to show him how to work his new blackberry!!!! AGGGG!!!!

I liked the last episode a great deal. Was very creative and leaves you wanting more. I hope the second series isn't broadcast here in a year's time, but rather soon, since there isn't much else on TV worth watching right now.
I agree Sunshineprincess with the Meretricious line, I thought it was hilarious too!

Well, you were right about PBS cutting the episodes. I found the following on holmesian.net about the scenes that were cut...
A Study In Pink -
- the first meeting of Lestrade and John at the empty house - a more detailed explanation of why the cabbie commits his crimes (major plot point!) - Sherlock snapping at Anderson, and in general annoying people in a very hilarious way during the drugs bust - the name of Mycroft's female assistant (or is it?) - a small monologue by Sherlock about genius as John and Sherlock walk to the cafe
In The Blind Banker -
- Sherlock spinning John around while holding his head - yup - A conversation between John and Sherlock and Sebastian (was it the one when Sebastian was washing his hands?) - John gets an ASBO instead of community service
In The Great Game -
- John interviewing West's fiancee (major plot point! the Bruce-Partington subplot will make a lot more sense with this included) - Bits and pieces of John interviewing Connie Prince's brother - John having some difficulties with Connie Prince's brother's cat - The second hostage calls Sherlock to give him a hint
So, I've ordered the DVD from BBC America. That was the only place I could find the DVD, everyelse was Backordered.

Jeez, we really were separated at birth! Or our husbands are!!! Thank goodness for DVRs! Sunshineprincess, thanks for the list of cuts. Those sound like some good (and very important) scenes. It is really annoying isn't it? I still don't get why they allot Masterpiece a 90 minute time slot and then cut all the 90 minute British shows down to 80 minutes so they can show 10 minutes of PBS commercials. Makes no sense. i had forgotten about those, as i missed them when they were on pbs, and i found them on netflix.
i was TRULY AMAZED at the intelligence of this modern version of holmes/watson.
1. they managed to keep the essential style of story telling by ACD, only made it better.
2. stories are fast paced without turning the corners. no stones unturned, and so you end up swallowing the mightily big pills presented to you (it is a bit over the top, and i love it all)
3. dialogues are so clever, funny, INTELLIGENT. top notch writing all through.
4. CAST IS FABULOUS. rufus said somewhere after filming amazing grace that we should keep an eye on the cumberbatch lad, he was sooooo right, this one is a total find for me. i searched for his other works on netflix, he is total GENIUS. PERFECT sherlock portraying. and who doesnt like martin freeman? he can make a watson we can relate to, propose some form of morality to "sociopath" holmes, and there again, no cliché! every person cast in there is just perfect. the lodger has made me ROTFL. the scenes with both mycroft and sherlock, and watson just staring in utter disbelief, are some of the best i have seen this year.
thank you thank you thank you for mentioning this superb series. i cannot wait to see more.
if zen is half as good, 2011 will be tv heaven.

While I'm still angry at German TV station ZDF for failing to show Zen so far, another public TV station is currently airing the first episodes of "Sherlock" on Sunday nights. I watched the first one yesterday and was absolutely ravished. What a hoot! I'm not very familiar with the original Sherlock, but I was a little concerned if the transfer into the 21st century would work - but it did, and how well! The cast is fabulous, the case to be solved was original and suspenseful, and I totally loved the humour of it. Some great witty one-liners there! I also loved the way viewers could literally read Sherlock's thoughts. (And I hadn't expected Stanley Townsend as a ponytailed waiter - his appearance made me howl with laughter )

A lot of us seem to like/love the same stuff here! I just saw the 1st episode of Sherlock Holmes too, 2 weeks ago, on a Dutch channel (July= detectivemonth there, they broadcasted Zen before Sherlock) I first doubted whether I would watch it, thought nothing new can be inventented on that "dull" character! But boy was I surprised!! It is absolutely worth watching, this series is so "refreshing" because of the new approach to the duo Holmes/ Watson. I was wildly enthousiastic about the 1st ep....a bit less on the 2nd which I watched last Wednesday...curious to see what the 3rd will bring next week. I'm glad there will be made more episodes, this series deserves it...but so did "Zen" (We wuz robbed! )

I completely agree, just watched the first 2 episodes (first was my favourite as well). I was curious before, because of some of the roles Benedict Cumberbatch played before, but he and Martin Freeman are very good together!

Hey anyother, I see you live in Holland, so you probably watched it at the same time & channel as me I honestly never heard of Cumberbatch before, Martin Freeman's face looked familiar so I googled him and found out I remembered him from Love Actually. They're 2 fine actors ... but they don't fysically attract me (am I lucky, now I can finally focus on the story...which was not evident in Zen )

I'm still racking my brains where I've seen Cumberbatch before (and no, it was not Amazing Grace, that one is still missing in my collection). He's not at all my type but his face is kind of memorable. And he's doing a very fine job as eccentric Sherlock.

And Bastognegirl, I think we do watch the same channels - well, our countries both are pretty small... No fysical attraction for me too, but why should there be (we have Rufus for that, don't we)?

I just watched the first episode. My attention was not very good, will re-watch it shortly. It was a very pleasant surprise, and quite cleverly done. I am convinced now some part of the film production in general is moving forward in the right direction. Strangely, when I saw Rupert Graves I felt a sharp pain in my heart that Rufus is not next to him. I guess I've got too much of Charles II in my blood.
