If you're talking about her avatar, that gorgeous curly-headed shot is from the play "Arcadia" in which Rufus played Septimus Hodge. Here's the whole picture ... thanks...sigh...i knew i should have tried mo move to London when i could:P

what amazing comments...all of them. First time I saw this I had to suspend all belief in reality. The story is a bit hokey but I don't think it was over the top. I think that's why we all go to the movies, to put our reality aside for a couple of hours and escape our lives for just a while. During the Great Depression Hollywood made some of THE best films ever made.....Fred and Ginger, musicals, light fare. Why? Because its citizens were out of work, starving, struggling doing anything they could to get by. Nothing like what we have going on now, far from it. People as broke as they were found money to go to the movies for pretty much the same reason we go now. I much prefer the old b&w films to what's out there now for the most part. Anyway, the thing about Rufus is that no matter how hokey the script or how over the top the premise/plot he somehow makes it completely believable. He has made some awful pics, yes they do exist, but somehow he's made all of his characters seem so very real and the story even becomes plausible. It's an art really, to do what he does he has a natural ability to come across quite naturally. I am always amazed at certain actors, they don't seem to be acting at all, it's like the character they are portraying are a natural extension of themselves. Paul Newman did that to perfection in The Verdict, he put himself out there stripped naked in a way, a powerhouse of a film. Rufus seems to do this all the time. I've seen him on stage and you don't look at anyone else, again not being biased it's just he has an amazing presence that you can't turn away from. I love this little gem, the music, the philosophy of it all and his performance. He has some amazing moments and emotions throughout and I was not at all dissatisfied with it.

I must agree Peach -
I found this film quite silly and highly predictible, but as always Rufus still gives a fine performance ... I loved his reaction when he discoveres that somehow the wine has gotten into their water supply and fines Uncle Cullen looking rather like a naughty child in the cellar - he looks marvelous in glasses!
I just wish that the story made more sense... maybe I saw a badly edited version.
Could anyone tell me the name of Ross' brother "the gardener"? I got the impression that the brother had had some sort of breakdown? Any idea what that was about - or was it just living with Uncle Cullen that drove him mad? I think I might find that the Uncle charming for an afternoon but not everyday or I'd want to push him off his pillar too!

This is one of my favourite Rufus films - it's just such a lovely feelgood movie and Rufus is adorable in it, but even I will admit it was really badly edited, Kq! (Not to mention Minnie Driver's character fancying Tom more than Ross - how unrealistic can you get?! ) The brother was called Paul. He's spoken of as if he were ill, but really he just kind of took himself out of mainstream society to concentrate on nature, rather than on material things. I always think, though, that until the end of the film, he was actually living a far happier and more rewarding life than Ross. (Can you tell I love this film, for all its flaws?

One of my favourites because I could so relate to the frustration of dealing with a daft relative - the pillar he had opted for was the top deck of any double decker that would get him to the Local airport. I can't tell you how many times the local police fetched him home having found him wandering in places dangerous to aviation - why I never knew - perhaps he wanted to escape his family! But the film made me realise that I too needed to let go!

Regarding Minnie Driver and her curious infatuation with Tom the Diver... well he's calm (almost comatose) and I suppose she liked that ... Minnie here with Rufus and in "The Riches" with my other secret love Eddie Izzard - A pattern is evolving! Rufus played Petruchio as a man with peculiarities (cross dressing) in ToTS and all I kept thinking was "Oh my...Eddie darling - look at that !" Now if Ms Henderson ends up in a production with EI - it will be fate! Or doom... Or if Mads, Eddie and Rufus were ever cast in anything ...Danger!

this morning I did a pile of ironing while watching with one eye on the DVD If the ironing had not been essential I would have left it and sat down to give my complete attention to this enchanting film. It may not be Shakespeare or high drama, but there are no murders or violence , no Four letter words or car crashes. It is the story of a young man who is trying to take care of his family when it is he who has lost his way. It is a love story . Family love Brotherly love, avuncular love love of friendship. love of nature love of music. And what is wrong with that? It is beautifully filmed, Someone wrote that they were surprised that it was filmed in California; me too. I have watched it several times and am still surprised that it is not the Brecon beacons or the Weald of Kent. Exquisitely acted... watch the faces , watch the eyes. I love Rufus's beautifully executed prat fall and as I have said many times, Nobody does tender like Rufus.
If you want a lift or just to feel good, then this is the film for you.

I think you've captured the essence of the movie pretty well, Frannie. It's one of my favourite pick-me-up films. Love the music, too.

In my re-watching of Rufus´ films, I´ve come to "Higher Love" (that´s the title on my kitschy DVD cover). As there are so many posts about this movie I will not write much. My DVD is without subtitles (once again!), so I didn´t understand everything, as Rufus often talks very quick and "mumbles" (perhaps that´s only Ross). I confess I loved this movie because of: Much Rufus and I think good Rufus - once again his acting with the eyes and the quick change of feelings Good story even if sometimes kitschy - I like those films, feel good and with a story behind, reminded me of my own "troubles" in life Good music - esp. loved the Rufus concert in the middle of the film, which marks a turn in the story Emotions - not only funny, but also earnest, had to cry at the end of the film when Ross found his way of life (I´m a bit emotional) Setting - didn´t believe it was California too, but very beautiful So, it got a bit longer than intended. Just one more film I can watch again and again!

Don't worry, you can write as much as you like! It's really a lovely little feel-good film, the perfect thing when you need something to pick you up. I actually didn't find it all that sappy because of the humour and the gentle irony shining through occasionally, and because of the cast that succeeds in making the characters come across as "real" people, not just clichés on legs.
