I think perhaps i won't go over to Digital Spy til tomorrow then - have had a very nice evening and don't need to spoil it by reading snarky comments. I swear some people just make comments like that for the sake of big naming themselves. Because hey, it wouldn't be "cool" to actually LIKE something now would it?
Everyone thinks themselves to be a TV critic now they have the internet as a platform!!!

My biggest gripe with the nay-sayers on Digital Spy is that so many of them, who were loudly expressing their dislike of the show, the confusing plot were OBVIOUSLY posting WHILE the show was going on.
D'uh - no wonder they couldn't follow it. This is the type of drama where you actually have to listen to all of the dialog, the plot isn't advanced by explosions or some character popping up out of nowhere to explain the entire thing to you. You actually had to pay attention to know what was going on.
But I guess in this multi-tasking, ADD world we live in, shows like Zen will always be faulted as "to slow."

Didn't realize that in my rage. How stupid can one be? Well, I'm generally of the old-fashioned kind who never thinks slowness is bad in itself ... in movies as in books ...

It's their loss, is all I can say (besides "nitwits" but that probably wouldn't be nice.)

Yes, what is the point in trying to watch something if you're more interested in posting comments at the same time???! They're probably people who walk out of the cinema after 10 minutes rather than giving the film/plot a chance.
One comment I thought was interesting was from someone who saw it on their HD channel - they said the colours were amazing. I thought that when i saw it at the Q & A but didn't think it transferred onto my TV in the same way - or maybe its time to buy a new one!!

"It’s not just Rufus who’s scorchio, the Roman heat swelters off the screen in a glorious golden sixties glow." "All I can say is that the BBC had better get Rufus et al packed off to Rome again pronto – I’m already in mourning at the thought of only two more episodes to go." Jothehat, welcome and what a nice review. Will you do some more for the next 2 episodes? Just remembered another thing I loved in "Vendetta": when he bangs his head on the steering wheel after seeing Tania in the rearview mirror with her male friend. That was Rufus's self-deprecating humour showing, wasn't it? Yes it was! My husband looked at me in amazement while I muttered: "Careful, you'll hurt yourself".

Judy, thanks so much for the Expat Shield link, watching Zen was the hugest and happiest surprise! I love the sexual tension between Zen and Tania, the most I've seen on TV in a long while. Ru's Zen isn't flawed to the point of being dysfunctional, just enough to make him lovable. And sexy, can't forget that! The plot wasn't as convoluted as I'd read it was, but I would have liked to know more about the Lucia character, it was too one dimensional, and undefined.
Looking forward to the next episode. Thanks again to Judy!

I agree with you rugirl - the vast majority of TV shows (particularly crime based), have endless frustrating amounts of sexual tension between the male & female lead which continues season after season with no real resolution (on the basis that it spoils the dynamic between them if they actually have a relationship). Now i know Aurelio and Tania aren't partners, but i think we are very, very lucky that the writers decided to make Zen's personal life of (seemingly) equal importance to the crime, as is the case in the books. It would have been easy to write him the other way, to make him grittier and more dysfunctional, so to find that they've decided to portray him very true to the book, just as a bloke trying to get through the best he can and with a romantic life as well, was very satisfying. Lets just keep our fingers crossed that that fabulous kiss in the lift is the start of something much more, as per the books. Hopefully the fact that Rufus was involved very early on meant that the writers, knowing what fabulous potential they had to work with, were encouraged to fully explore that part of his life. Is that the two of them in a bedroom that i spy in the trailer for Cabal? ;D Although i do love EH, the fact that Rachel didn't jump Jacob by about episode 2 never made sense to me - but maybe that's just me

Numbat...I agree. Jacob Hood would have been mine in episode one...if I were Rachel! Tania seems to be a smart lady...for now. Seems more realistic of the character because I could not work next to that man and not make a pass at him.

Although i do love EH, the fact that Rachel didn't jump Jacob by about episode 2 never made sense to me - but maybe that's just me Ah, yeah sweetie, it's just you! (just kidding) Actually, don't you think the way he kept bringing up the dead wife might have been a tiny bit off-putting? Seriously though, I'm with you numbat - to keep the sexual tension going forever is so annoying and unrealistic, people don't do that in real life. If you're that attracted to someone you either act on it or you take steps to stay away from that person. And numbat, yes, your sharp eyes are right, that was a bed Tania and Zen were standing next to in the trailer for Cabal! Not a spoiler since Zen already told Tania they were going to have an affair, but in the books, they do end up in bed.

Well, as far as Agent Rachel Young goes, I think both the character and the actress lacked any hint of sexuality and/or seductiveness. Could be that's how Marley was told to play the role, but come on! This is RUFUS we're talking about. You'd have to be comatose not to be attracted to him. I'm glad Zen looks like he'll get the opportunty to get the girl (at least that's how it appears).

Hello - I'm new here (if not new to Rufus's charms and talents). I review for a UK TV blog and drooled/reviewed Zen last night. Hi, Jothehat, Welcome! Excellent review, and I also enjoyed your earlier lustbox post. ;D Keep up the great work!
