If I really had to say, I think I liked the tv version of Zens character best. I think we saw a "gentler" Zen. I read the books before the series, and liked them. Would have loved to see how they may have adapted some of the later books to tv. The great thing about FF is you can make the character what you want or see. Cant wait to read them! (I am very behind in FF reading)

Good point Kygal Besides any television or film adaptation will always stand as 'an adaptation' of a book rather than an exact copy.
I am really enjoying the Dibdin books and I hope to use them as pleasant distractions when I can.

I like the tv Zen better too. The book version seems more like the Moscati character to me, at least physically speaking.

I hope to get Vendetta and Cabal shortly! They don't have the RS covers but that's alright...
If they did - I might just sit and stare at the cover and then never end up reading them!
sigh!

Good point! Are you going to read all 11 or just the 3 mentioned. I think I liked the Vendetta book out of the 3 the best.

I definitely recommend reading them in order, to get the development of Zen's private life straight.

I saw the TV programme first and then bought the books in anticipation of hopefully seeing all eleven books in the series being made, and we all know what happened to that. I managed to get the first six books and have since added the other five to my Kindle and still have these five to read. Yes please read them in order if you can. After seeing our gorgeous Rufus as Zen, which I consider an outstanding series and a most wonderful characterisation , I must admit that even though Dibdin is a brilliant writer for me the TV adaptations won hands down. Zen in the books came over for me as a bumbling Columbo type character, past his prime and nothing like our suave Italian detective as played byRufus. I cannot praise the production team, directors and most of all the script writer enough for what they did with this series. This is not to take anything from the books as a separate entity, I have since gone back and started reading the whole series again, I am currently on Dead Lagoon and taking them at a slower pace this time. As Andy Harries, the Producer of Zen said after making the series, they are the same but different.

When I learnt that Rufus was to play Zen, I did what I always do. I went into Amazon and gradually got all the books and read them in order. I did enjoy them . I loved Michael Dibdin's style of writing . After the first couple of chapters I began to see Rufus as Zen . When the series came out. I was ready and I saw only Rufus and Andy Harries' version. I have started to read the books again and I see only Rufus as I read.
I saw TPOTE interview with Ken Follett when he says that any actor worth his salt can make you see him as your character even if you have written the character as very different.
This is what Rufus does with every part he plays .

Hello friends !
Well I finished 'Rat King' and started 'Vendetta' and I can now understand the 'Tania in the books vs Tania in thee Series' paradox. These stories are wonderfully written and quite intriguing. Thanks! Poor Aurelio!

Glad you are enjoying them, KQ! They are well written, and as the series goes on, you also find that the books change in tone too--some are comic, some are tragic. Dibdin was really talented, and to me they were page turners no matter what style they were.
(I got most of mine really cheap on ebay.)

Me too! Both Cabal & Vendetta were about one penny each - not considering postage! Its tragic -but I paid full cost for Ratking at the shops - so it evens out I suppose.
