Just finished reading Ratking after having seen the Zen series. Although Dibdin writes very expressive, I couldn´t imagine Rufus. I only saw an elderly pudgy gentleman. The story is also different, it´s not even settled in Rome. As I read that the books get more interesting with the time, I´ll start Vendetta sometime (also have the "Rufusified" version! - sigh -) I think it´s often that way that you like the version you see/read first better than the other one. I loved TPOTE as a book, but can´t remember the film so well - have to watch it again!

That's interesting. I had no trouble picturing Rufus from the first line on, even though Zen is not described to look exactly like him and his character is quite different from the way he was portrayed in the series.
Keep us posted what you think of the other books in the series!

I read Ratking shortly after hearing that Rufus had been cast as Zen. I thought the description fit fairly well, except Aurelio has blue eyes.
Midoro, the TV show wasn't completely faithful to the books, but they were good adaptions. They roughly followed the plots in all three. As for them all being set in Rome, I remember reading an interview (maybe with Rufus?) that was a deliberate decision on the part of the producers to contain costs.

I saw the series, before I read the books, so it was easier to imagine Rufus in the role. Wish they'd bring it back on PBS.

Read Vendetta in the recent weeks and liked it much more than Ratking. Somehow I could better imagine Rufus as Zen. Also liked the beginning of his relationship with Tania.

Vendetta was a very good book (and the best episode in the series). Are you planning to read them all, midoro?

Cabal is waiting at home for me, but if I like it, I´ll perhaps also read the books that weren´t made into films (they´re quite a lot I remember). I want to know the whole story of Zen!

Excellent idea! There were some very, very good books later in the series.

I think Vendetta was my favorite book. I enjoyed reading all of them. Warning, some of them are a little dark though. Hope you get the chance to read them.

I haven't read any of the books so far, but they are on my list. On my next visit to London I want to see if I still can find copies with Rufus on the front cover. As there are many bookstores in London, and I love to visit them I think I have a good chance of finding them.

Shopgirl, you should enjoy them, Michael Dibdin was an excellent writer. The Zen of the books is about 10 years older than Rufus, but the description of Zen in Ratking (the first book) fits Rufus almost to a T. The difference is that Zen is described as having blue eyes.

Have fun browsing the bookshops in London, shopgirl! Let us know what you think if you read the books.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series and still am grateful that Rufus got to be in the series - otherwise I would probably never have read the books.
