Hey I watched that about 4 times.....well I lied, 7 actually and always enjoy it. That's the kind of sweet comedy drama I'd love to see him again.
Tipou: I second that for the best ending in cinema. " If you look for someone to love you imperfectly, look no further, for I am he."

I tried to watch Illuminata yesterday, but fell asleep... I don't blame the movie or Rufus for this. The dvd arrived yesterday, and it was already late when I had time to watch it. Plus I had an extremely hectic week at work. What I did see of Rufus was sweet, but I'm not sure whether what I remember of it was real or a dream (if a dream a niiiiiiice dream though ). I think I've seen about 2/3rd, so I'll give it another go this weekend.

One of the highly beneficial side effects of Rufusitis is that you lay your hand on little movie gems you would never ever have touched or even found otherwise! I remember hesitating before ordering Illuminata as it didn't sound much like a story I'd be able to relate to. Thank God I did click that Order button after reading here that it was a recommendable film for Rufians. It had me transfixed from the very beginning, I instantly loved the way this film is made, with many loving little references to grand old theatre traditions, puppets, props, gilded stucco auditoriums, lavish costumes and splendid music, whether dramatic or serene. The first scene with Tuccio and Rachel was a wonderful start, and when Dominique first appeared from under the stack of hats while Simone tried to give him directions, that was just so hilarious There wasn't really anyone of the cast I didn't like, a marvellous ensemble with one actor better than the other, all giving their characters a very personal, eccentric twist without exaggeration. And as someone wrote before, while I cannot comment on how typical of theatre business the story is, everyone knows the little rivalries and struggles in any workplace, so there was enough to identify with even if the theatre is not your world. While it was already great fun to watch the relationships and the story around Tuccio's innovative play develop, things became even better with the night of the "merry-go-round" when almost everyone suddenly ended up with someone else or at least doing some weird things - it became quite explicit but never grossly so, all done with taste and in keeping with the general tone of the film. And it just keeps getting better until the end with the fateful rumour about Paris, the resulting arguments, the death of poor Piero (his final scene was so beautifully done with everybody flocking to his bedside one after the other and then him laid out in the clothes from his last role), and the absolute highlight, the staging of Tuccio's play with this beautiful, beautiful ending. This was such a perfect scene, wonderfully acted (even by Simone!), beautifully staged with the stairway to the moon and the veil-thin curtain. The final dialogue between Rachel and Dominique was absolutely heartbreaking (without the slightest hint of kitsch). The wavering voice, the little tear running down his nose and cheek, and the images of the audience mesmerized by this moving performance. This gave me a little impression of what it must be like to see Ruf on stage. Very intense but never overacting Dominique was not just a selfish brat to me, as one might have thought at the beginning. Yeah, he's (maybe too) confident of himself and sometimes behaves not particularly well, but he's a complex and emotional personality who must have a very sensitive core deep down to be able to play Tuccio's husband figure so movingly. I love this film for giving Rufus so much bandwidth and the possibility to show his full scope of talent. Not just another angry young man, but also a very comical side as well as a very tender one. Cutting all expletives and sexually explicit scenes from the film is a crime! It is so funny when Rufus swears And all over the movie there were so many hilarious lines (not only for Dominique). For example, I laughed so much when Ruf commented on Piero's first collapse onstage dryly with "That's what happens when a role is miscast." Even if I was not totally Sewellized by now anyway, I'd have to say that he is a truly gifted and wonderful actor. This husband-and-wife scene is the very cream of the art of acting. And so devastatingly beautiful, especially when he lays his head on her lap. He looks so young there, like a child seeking comfort and shelter. A scene like a painting.

Thanks for the compliment and the links, Judy! The Quasimodo impersonation was very cute, too.

Some people were just great at putting their expressions in to words and make others like me said "exactly!" Every time I watched this one, I'm so looking forward for that ending....I wish I'm as lucky as those ones who'd seen him on stage, perhaps one day soon. Rufus moves me! My other fav scene is when Dominique by himself swore/cursed up and down on Tucchio's turned out to be false-betrayal; cigarette on one hand....just classic
