Can't remember most of the stuff about Arcadia, that play was quite some time before I discovered Rufus Sewell.
So thanks a lot for finding and posting these details and back ground infos, Laila!

Ugh, that article from The Observer is awful. It would not be given to any dog for dinner were it covered in bread sauce and stuffed with chestnuts. "The genius of the place is decribed as a hermit with a tortoise, and that explains, or at least contributes to an understanding of, the scientific investigation running parallel to the literary speculations." Ouch! But the theatre pack is cool. It shows so well what a fantastic writer Stoppard is - he put all these topics into the play, but each of them is approached from so many directions, and they are served with so much enthusiasm, well, he raises everything to the third power. I liked the "...but the chosen hermit was caught at the end of three weeks going down to the pub." sort of bits - and look what Stoppard is able to make: from the famous funny line of Lady Croom "But surely a hermit who takes a newspaper is not a hermit in whom one can have complete confidence." (he continues the joke in a darker manner with Septimus's "Is there room for a piano?" (a subtle attack on his rival, Count Zelinsky)) he leads us to the darkest dark moment when we realize who the hermit was and why he became a hermit. Oh. And he even gives us an extra kick. (And that last kick was already given in the second scene.) "What did they do with all the hermit's paper?" "Made a bonfire." Well, I think this is one of the saddest endings a Rufus character had. In an interview before the premiere of Rock'n'Roll, Rufus said about Stoppard: "He's so incredibly deft at storytelling. In Arcadia, when they're talking about Thomasina in the modern-day part of the play and a character goes: 'Oh the girl that died in the fire?', I would look forward to it because backstage you could just hear a trillion hairs stand up on end."" I love the structure of Arcadia sooooo much. And the finale is breathtaking! "Septimus: So the Improved Newtonian Universe must cease and grow cold. Dear me. Thomasina: Yes, we must hurry if we are going to dance. Septimus: Oh, we have time, I think. --- When we have found all the mysteries and lost all the meaning, we will be alone, on an empty shore. Thomasina: Then we will dance. Is this a waltz? Septimus: It will serve. Thomasina: Goody!" ! (And this is just a fraction!) I liked the pictures. It's great to see the other characters - the dreamy style of the Chloë Coverly pic is a surprise, isn't it? Seeing the Before-After pictures was interesting, too. It's so sad the pictures have disappeared from the older posts. I hope yours are carved on marble, Laila. I used two pics of Anniem in the cap-it game and I had to resize them, so now I can repost them, but I really would like to glue all things onto the Rooftop. With an extra strong glue. Except that Coveney article. And I'll add the pic from the gossipy scene (so I can end my post with a grinning smiley): "Jellaby: Her ladyship encountered Mrs Chater during the night. Septimus: Where? Jellaby: On the threshold of Lord Byron's room. Septimus: Ah. Which one was leaving and which entering?"

I found the article in the program, somebody left it there 20 years ago A question: the picture with the candle on the table refers to the last part of the play where they dance?

A question: the picture with the candle on the table refers to the last part of the play where they dance? It must be the ending part of the last scene. Thomasina: Am I waltzing? Septimus: Yes, my lady. (He gives her a final twirl, bringing them to the table where he bows to her. He lights her candlestick.) Septimus: Take your essay, I have given it an alpha in blind faith. Be careful with the flame. Thomasina: I will wait for you to come. Septimus: I cannot. Thomasina: You may. Septimus: I may not. Thomasina: You must. Septimus: I will not. (She puts the candlestick and her essay on the table.) Thomasina: Then I will not go. Once more, for my birthday. (Septimus and Thomasina start to waltz together)
...Curtain.This is a rehearsal pic, but I think Emma Fielding has a "you must" face and Rufus has an "I will not" face in it.
