Dirtysomething...

I wrote this in another forum.......so some of you may have already read this.....but I thought I'd post it here too...

Well I finally watched this today, twice. I'm still not sure how I feel about it completely, but yes, I did like it. It's very odd (my husband walked out about 15 min. into it) it's very quirky, it's very cute, it's very sweet, it's very............hmmmmmm, I'm not sure what words to even use!

If you've read the review on Maxx's site about it, you'll know what it's about. I won't give any more away as yet. But it really is a great little story about two people that have something, want something else, get something else, don't like what they get, think they want what they had to begin with, find out they want both, and end up finding a way to have it! How's that for a review??? LOL

Rachel Weisz is fantastic (this is her first film) and they guy who plays "Dog" is hysterical! Rufus, as Clive, is adorable (similar to Ross in ASF) both in his role and just physically (although you can see the former teeth!). One reviewer said that they thought Clive wanted to be like Becca and Dog............I think he liked the IDEA of being like them, but it wasn't who he was. Just like I think they liked the IDEA of being like him (at least Becca did), but realized she wasn't as much as she thought she was.

Again, I don't want to give too much away, because this really is a film that you need to EXPERIENCE, not just watch. It's quirky in the way Sachem Farm and Gone to Seed was (only more so), yet it's different too. It's like a sweet little trinket that you found exploring one day and hid away in a box under your bed. And then you think about it and you have to run to your room and pull it out and examine it all over again.........it's that special, with a little oddity thrown in!

The film is only 58 minutes long and I'd say Ruf is in, maybe 10 minutes or so, but he's just cute as can be, and his role is important to the story.

That's the one thing about ALL of his films no matter what they're about or who his co-stars are, his part, however small is always significant and important to the story.

That and the fact that he always gives 110% in each and every performance.

That sounds like Ross in At Sachem Farm! Is he as cute and cuddly as Ross?

He did remind me a lot of Ross in ASF...........he's quite cute, and a bit cuddly I suppose, just not enough of him!

I really liked Dirtysomething too, Miss M. A short, sweet, quirky film with a message. I was trying to think of why they chose that title, and I think its because the title and the movie is twisted homage (in a way) on yuppies, you know a la the "Thirtysomething" tv series. They weren't "Thirtysomething", they were "Dirtysomething" ha, ha. The message that home is where your heart is, so don't let attachment to possesions get in the way of that-- is an old standard. What DS showed which was great was that you can still function and have a purpose within society without being a total "sellout". I loooved the way they had Dog actually be the one who ended up struggling materialism. Hee, hee. And his first attempt at H.I. was hillarious!!
The director even threw in a gratuitous Rufus Eyes shot, didn't he?? Ha, ha. You know, in the scene where he removes his glasses while chatting in the office-- as if to show, I'm not only really nice, but REALLY gorgeous too!!

It really was a quirky little movie with a great message. I liked it.
I would have LOVED to see Rufus play Dog's role though - it would have been great!
And talk about a mop of hair!!

I would like to comment but do not know if I am giving too much away - sorry if I am - please beware!

I noticed a familiarity to GTS immediately - there was something in the style or technique in the writing but GTS immediately came to mind.

I believe that Clive had grown beyond Becca and Dog - he had satisfied his need to wander, travel, exist. Interestingly enough, his wife still yearned for that existence, sacrificing her inner needs to move on with Clive.

Becca, out of desparation to support her loser mates (and I say loser with affection) against her will, I might add, thought she was fitting into Clive's world and moving beyond her present experience. I believe Dog's actions and self-sacrifices made Becca see (in time) to make the decision that was ultimately right for her.

In so short a span of time, I think the parallel between these couples, their worlds and sacrifices and personal growth was well done. I appreciated the way the organized, material, world was delivered.

Yes, Clive was Ross-like but the similarity was more visual because his character wasn't allowed the screen time to blossom. With the time allotted, Ruf yet again gave Clive great definition.

Dog was great but I must admit I had great difficulty watching this film. Visually, Dog made my skin itch. The dog was cleaner and more appealing as a house guest and a very good actor as well. I do not under-estimate two of my best friends on earth - soap and water.

I agree, Pattirose - I actually sat there looking at Dog and cringing because I knew he had fleas and things crawling on his body, wishing that Rufus had the role. I also find it funny that with Ruf as Dog my skin wouldn't had crawled.

Instead of remaking movies for no good reason, maybe movies should be remade to allow actors to play the counter role. Okay - this can be expensive so lets just do it for Rufus's movies.

I have finally seen Dirtysomething. I liked it very much. Rufus did resemble a more intellectual Ross, I thought, with Middlemarch curls and was a good guy, for a change! And I agree with Pattirose and Tinker, Dog was hard to watch, so dirty and grungy. The story was very quirky and unusual.

While purchasing something else I ran across a copy of this over at raretv.co.uk for 7.45 pounds. They also have Precious Bane a very hard to find Clive Owen movie.

(I've only just placed an order so I don't know anything about how reputable they are.)
