maz, I went to the website but can't find DN. I looked thru the 2009 movies and did a search but can't find it. Waaah! On the main page click on download in the purple bar,and load the vuse software. Once you've done that there should be a search bubble, type in your title and it should bring up various choices. I download the title Downloading Nancy 2008 Limited dvd rip xvid-hls. Also make sure you choose to search the title in the other related sites btjunkie and mininova.

This movie is ON DEMAND with both RCN and Comcast Cable. I believe it was about individuals who are emotionally disturbed (etc) but I did not find the movie offensive, though it was excessively tense and disturbing because it causes discomfort. Absolutely depressing and sad, it makes us aware of how lost, destructive and alone people can be (or are). It opens your eyes to an entirely different aspect of a dark, hidden life.
I can't understand why so many of the attendees walked out of the film - unless they saw a bit of a personality in themselves, hitting too close to home or more probable - a simple desire to exit reality rather than entering a truly different one when attending the cinema.
I believe I heard Rufus allude in his radio interview that there is so much violence of every parameter on the big screen and television. Prior to seeing this movie, I did not know what to expect but I think, considering the subject matter and the characters developed, that the production crew was very thoughtful and subdued in the making of the film. The knowledge of what was going to happen or had happened was more in the mind than on the screen.
Cascino, The Godfather, any of those ridiculous Freddy or Haloween films are so much more graphic and visually violent - but then they are probably considered ficitonal or make-believe and this film is very, very one-on-one and personal. I do not think that society wants to acknowledge that these issues exist - ignore it and it will go away.

I was thinking along very similar lines while watching this Tinkerdog. I really can't believe people were walking out on this. Especially at a film festival..I mean come on. It must be just "too real" for people to deal with. I am also confused as to why so many critics are writing about this film as if it is such an outrage. It isn't, it is just like you said... people would rather be allowed to continue ignoring the truth. If we don't have to look at it, then we can pretend it isn't there. Kudos Rufus for your bravery and honesty!!!!

Found the DN dvd in my mailbox today and have already watched it. I had read enough to know what I was "getting into". Was not a feel-good movie (which I like) due to the subject matter. It was dark and disturbing. Was not a "bad" movie...just not my thing. I did think all the actors did a very good job...especially Rufus (of course) and Maria. I did not like Albert very well but I did end up feeling sorry for him. These two people should have never been together in the first place. Neighter one could provide what the other one needed.
I find it hard to believe people walked out on this movie at Sundance. It may have hit to close to home for some. I did not realize the movie was based on a real-life event, although I know this happens...the hurting self part.
After watching this:
I plan to hide my husbands golf clubs.
I am ready for Rufus to get the lead in a romantic comedy!

Have moved this post to the "DN Spoiler Thread" as that's where the movie has been discussed in depth for those who've seen it.

I did not see this online so I can not compare to that. I did feel very sorry and sad for Albert at the end . Probably because Rufus did such a wonderful job...not sure I would have cared if another actor had portrayed Albert... but I did not like him...he just seemed very cold to me. Albert just seemed disgusted by Nancy....and maybe he had good reason. I would have like more info on their life together...wondered if they ever had any good times. He probably wanted a wife and kids and she probably wanted to get away from her family. They both had issues!

Just found this about DN and how true:
"This is clearly a movie with a hidden message that reveals actual behavioral traits from a disease, a topic, that most are not willing to discuss as they fear being shunned. As the movie ends, you may find yourself asking "how can someone do that?" The answer is simple... those that suffer will go to every length to keep you from knowing. Yes, people you live and work around… Will you be able to recognize the next victim…the next "Nancy?"

Sent for this film from Amazon. It came in the post and is a German copy with German sleeve so could not read anything about the film and did not know anything about it. I had purposely not read the thread as I didn't want any preconceived ideas about the film.
I agree with the comments made previously. It is obviously a very dark and disturbing subject and was very brave of Rufus to play the character he did. I thought all the acting was superb in it.
The film is out of our normal comfort zones. We like the feel good romantic or funny movies.
But I guess these films have to be made. It wasn't nice to watch this woman destroying herself. I believe Rufus said of his character ' Albert is inept' which totally fits the bill. They were totally unsuited to each other. I believe she was damaged and would have destroyed herself whatever had happened. Albert was totally out of his depth with her.
It was a very sad film really. I need to watch again some time but the Jason Patric character was a convicted murderer? The end seemed a little vague to me. I really need to watch again but not yet!

You've summed it up really well, Robela! I watched this not long ago, but didn't want to review it straight after, it's obviously going to affect people in different ways, and it's a hard subject to talk about... I know what you mean about not wanting to watch it straight away!
Incidentally, I thought that the JP character was convicted of Nancy's murder, not anyone else? Anyway, I can't say it's my 'favourite' Rufus films, but I do think it's one of the best things he's done, even though it doesn't make for comfortable viewing.
I realise things in films, even when based on true stories, are often dramatised to make for better viewing, and I certainly don't know anyone as badly off as Nancy, but the thing that made this film so good for me was the fact that it was dealing with things that are still quite taboo. I've had various friends who regard any form of self-harming as completely insane, and I find that this film shows it in a far more realistic light, that it's become the only outlet for emotion that she has. It doesn't show her as crazy, it explains the roots of her behaviour. Albert's character was well written too, his 'ineptness' and the way it comes out was well-acted (of course, it's Rufus!) and again well explained, especially at the end, when I think he finally begins to better understand how she was.
This is where some of the dramatisation comes in, because although I don't know people in such extreme situations, a lot of it in more watered-down forms seems quite prevalent, and I found it surprisingly easy to empathise with the main characters. I really don't understand why so many walked out at Sundance, I'd love to find out more about that audience though, and find out why!!
