Thanks for that review Rousse, As I was writing my feelings yesterday, I realised that it must have been just Nancy's murder he was convicted of, but to tell the truth I must have been so tired by the time I got to the end of the film that I didn't grasp it fully. As I said, I need to watch again and will do as soon as I can summon up enough enthusiasm. It's a film that we need to watch as it does convey a real story but one that we might not want to face. I feel I need to watch again to more fully try to understand someone so damaged and the consequences on the people around her.

Probably this wasn't quite the movie of choice for a sunny Sunday afternoon and a cup of hot chocolate ... found it rather hard to watch but that may have to do with me not being in the right mood for this kind of film today.
Anyway, all the main actors did a superb job in this disturbing story. The lighting, draining all warmth out of the colours, created a cold atmosphere, mirroring the lack of true mutual love and understanding in Nancy and Albert's marriage, as did the setting with its old-fashioned furniture and plastic-covered sofas - nothing warm and cosy about that house.
Maria Bello's performance is scarily, shockingly believable. It's very hard to watch how she loses her grip on reality more and more, craving what Albert cannot give her. She seems to believe herself unworthy of love and still wants someone to understand her special desires, finally getting caught in a downward spiral.
Albert is a rather cold character, what he cares about most is business and golf, not his wife. (I was wondering if they ever really loved each other or if he just needed a wife because it's a kind of standard in his world to be married.) When he realized more and more that the world as he knew it is falling apart and started to show some emotion, I did become more and more sympathetic with him and felt quite sorry for him in the end. He certainly hadn't wanted things to end like that.
Albert is certainly none of those characters you love instantly despite their faults, but Rufus is grand at portraying him in depth. Again I was fascinated by how different he manages to look, coming across as the narrow-minded, emotionally inept man that Albert is - posture, facial expressions, gestures, everything seems authentic.
While this certainly won't become my favourite, I must say that it is very well made, and thankfully there is very little gore and violence. What made it very difficult for me to watch was the overall depressing tone without a glimmer of hope for any of them, but still hats off to the makers and the actors for daring to deal with this kind of taboo subject.

Saw Downloading Nancy for the first time yesterday, and what a difficult film it is to watch. Some good acting, but way too dark for me. I can understand how it's important to tackle some taboo subjects, but still didn't make it enjoyable, I must say.
